Questions & Answers about Danas imate sastanak.
How do we know imate is the formal 'you' here?
Imate is the 'you' plural form of the verb imati (to have). In Croatian, this plural form is also used to speak formally and politely to a single person, which is why the translation specifies '(formal)'.
Where is the word for 'you' in this sentence?
The word for 'you' (vi) is left out because the verb itself tells us who is acting. The -te ending on imate already means 'you (plural/formal)'. In Croatian, subject pronouns are usually dropped unless you specifically want to emphasize them.
Why doesn't the word sastanak (meeting) change its ending after the verb imati?
The verb imati requires its direct object to be in the accusative case. However, sastanak is a masculine noun that represents a non-living thing. In Croatian, masculine nouns for non-living things look exactly the same in the accusative case as they do in their basic dictionary form.
How would I make this sentence negative to say 'You do not have a meeting today'?
