Question 1

Why isn't pozivnica in the accusative case, since it's the object of the printing?

Accepted Answer

Because tiskanje (printing) is a noun, not a verb. While the verb tiskati takes an accusative object, when we turn the action into a verbal noun, its object shifts to the genitive case. This is called the objective genitive, acting as the equivalent of saying "the printing of invitations" in English.

Question 2

Wait, doesn't pozivnica look exactly like the nominative singular?

Accepted Answer

Yes, it is spelled exactly the same, but here it is the genitive plural. Many feminine nouns ending in -a have a genitive plural that also ends in -a. In spoken Croatian, this plural ending is pronounced with a long vowel. In writing, we rely on context—it logically follows that multiple invitations are being printed.

Question 3

Why is the enclitic je placed after the whole phrase Tiskanje pozivnica?

Accepted Answer

Enclitics (like the short verb je) go in the second position of a sentence. While that can literally be after the first word, it is often better to place it after the first grammatical block. Tiskanje pozivnica acts as a single, strongly connected noun phrase, so placing the enclitic right after the whole block is the most natural choice.

Question 4

Are verbal nouns like tiskanje generally formed from perfective or imperfective verbs?

Accepted Answer

Almost all verbal nouns ending in -nje are formed from imperfective verbs, and tiskanje (from the imperfective tiskati) is no exception. Because these nouns usually represent an ongoing process or the general concept of an action, imperfective verbs are the standard choice for making them.
