Questions & Answers about Neispravni dijelovi bivaju vizualno pregledani i odbačeni.
Why do we use bivaju here instead of just su?
The verb bivati is the imperfective counterpart to biti. While su pregledani could just mean they are currently in an inspected state, using bivaju pregledani specifically highlights the habitual, recurring nature of a standard procedure. It indicates that defective parts routinely get inspected as part of an ongoing process.
Since bivaju establishes a habitual action, why are the participles pregledani and odbačeni formed from perfective verbs?
This is a very common pattern for the iterative passive! The auxiliary bivati takes care of showing that the overall process is repeated. The perfective participles show the completed result of each individual repetition. Every time a defective part goes through this routine, the acts of inspecting and discarding it are fully completed.
Why do both pregledani and odbačeni end in -ni?
In the passive voice, passive participles act like adjectives and must agree with the subject in gender, number, and case. The subject dijelovi is masculine, plural, and in the nominative case, so both participles take the masculine plural nominative suffix -ni.
The singular word for part is dio. Where does the l in dijelovi come from?
The noun dio historically ended in an l, which turned into an o at the end of the word (a very common historical sound change in Croatian). When we add the plural suffix -ovi for short masculine nouns, that original l is no longer at the very end of the word, so it reappears.
