Questions & Answers about Slikat ćemo selfi gdje god nađemo lijep pejzaž.
Why is nađemo in the present tense when the finding happens in the future?
Nađemo is the present tense of the perfective verb naći (to find). In Croatian, perfective verbs cannot be used in the present tense for ongoing actions. Instead, they are frequently used in subordinate clauses—like after gdje god (wherever), ako (if), or kad (when)—to express an action that will be completed in the future.
Does slikati usually mean "to paint"? Can I use fotografirati instead?
Yes, slikati literally means "to paint," but in everyday conversation, it is the most common verb for taking a picture. You can absolutely use fotografirati, but slikati is much more natural in an informal context like taking a selfi.
Why is the "i" missing at the end of slikat?
When forming the future tense, if an infinitive ending in -ti comes directly before the auxiliary verb (ću, ćeš, ćemo, etc.), the final -i is dropped in both writing and pronunciation. If the word order were reversed, the "i" would remain: Mi ćemo slikati selfi.
How does the word god work in gdje god?
Adding god as a separate word after an interrogative word turns it into an "-ever" word. Just as gdje god means "wherever", you can create similar combinations like tko god (whoever), što god (whatever), and kada god (whenever).
Why does the direct object lijep pejzaž look like it is in the nominative case?
It is actually in the accusative case! Pejzaž is a masculine noun. For masculine nouns that represent inanimate objects (non-living things), the accusative case takes the exact same form as the nominative. The adjective lijep automatically matches this form.
