Questions & Answers about Je li njezin šef šokiran jer je čuo pravu istinu?
Why is šokiran considered an adjective here instead of a passive verb?
Although šokiran is technically the past passive participle of the verb šokirati (to shock), it functions here entirely as a stative adjective describing a psychological state. It simply describes how the boss feels right now, rather than an action being done to him, and it takes standard adjective endings to match šef (masculine, singular, nominative).
Isn't the phrase pravu istinu somewhat redundant?
Literally, yes, it translates to the real truth. However, prava istina is a very common collocation in Croatian used for emphasis. It acts just like the plain truth or the whole truth in English, often implying that a previously hidden fact has finally been revealed.
Why does the auxiliary verb je come immediately after jer?
The word jer (because) starts a new dependent clause. In Croatian, enclitics like the auxiliary je naturally gravitate to the second position of their clause. Therefore, je steps in right after the first word of the new clause (jer), placing it before the main verb čuo.
Could I use njen instead of njezin in this sentence?
Yes, you could perfectly well say njen šef. Both njezin and njen mean her and are practically interchangeable. Njezin is often preferred in formal standard Croatian, but you will hear both frequently in everyday spoken language.
