Questions & Answers about Zaštitit ćemo prirodu ako budemo reciklirali otpad!
Why do we use budemo reciklirali here instead of the regular future tense (ćemo reciklirati)?
This is the Future II tense. In standard Croatian, when an ako (if) or kad (when) clause describes a future event that is a condition for the main action, we use Future II. It is formed with the perfective present of the verb 'to be' (here, budemo) and the l-participle (reciklirali). You cannot use the regular Future I tense immediately after ako for these future conditions.
Why is the final 'i' missing from the verb zaštititi in the phrase zaštitit ćemo?
In the Future I tense, when an infinitive ending in -ti is placed directly before the auxiliary verb (ću, ćeš, će, ćemo, ćete, će), you must drop the final -i in both writing and pronunciation. If you flipped the word order, the 'i' would return: Mi ćemo zaštititi prirodu.
The word prirodu gets an -u ending because it's a direct object. Why doesn't otpad change its ending?
Both words are direct objects in the accusative case. Priroda (nature) is a feminine noun ending in -a, so its accusative ending becomes -u. Otpad (waste), however, is a masculine inanimate noun (a thing, not a person or animal). For masculine inanimate nouns, the accusative form is identical to the nominative dictionary form.
