Future Conditions with ako
To express a future condition using ako (if), the dependent clause uses the Future II tense.
As a reminder, Future II is formed with the auxiliary verb budem and the l-participle of the main verb. The consequence in the main clause uses the standard Future I tense.
| The water will be clean if we protect the sources. | Voda će biti čista ako budemo čuvali izvore. |
| We will protect nature if we recycle waste! | Zaštitit ćemo prirodu ako budemo reciklirali otpad! |
Future Changes with kada
Similarly, we use kada (when) with Future II to describe a future event that needs to occur before another future action can happen.
When the kada (or ako) clause starts the sentence, the two clauses are separated by a comma. If the main clause comes first, no comma is needed.
| When the sea level rises, we will lose the coast. | Kada razina mora bude rasla, izgubit ćemo obalu. |
| When we have renewable sources, we will have more electricity. | Kada budemo imali obnovljive izvore, imat ćemo više struje. |
Questions
To ask questions about these future scenarios, change the main clause into a question using Future I. The ako or kada clause continues to use Future II.
| What will we do when the river level rises? | Što ćemo učiniti kada razina rijeke bude rasla? |
| Will we lose nature if pollution rises? | Hoćemo li izgubiti prirodu ako zagađenje bude raslo? |
| Will global warming be smaller if we protect the environment? | Hoće li globalno zatopljenje biti manje ako budemo čuvali okoliš? |
