Questions & Answers about Gdje si i kamo ideš?
Why does this sentence use both gdje and kamo if the English translation uses 'where' both times?
In English, we use 'where' for both location and destination. Croatian distinguishes between them. Gdje asks about your current location ('where at'), which pairs with the verb si (you are). Kamo asks about your destination ('where to'), which pairs with the verb of motion ideš (you are going).
Could I use kuda instead of kamo in the second part of the sentence?
It changes the meaning. Kamo ideš? asks for your final destination ('Where are you heading?'). If you asked Kuda ideš?, you would be asking about the route or direction you are taking ('Which way are you going?'). Keep in mind that in casual street speech, native speakers sometimes mix these up, but standard Croatian strictly uses kamo for destination.
Why is the verb si placed immediately after gdje?
The word si is an enclitic, a 'weak' verb form that cannot stand on its own and naturally takes the second position in a sentence or clause. Since gdje is the first word of the first clause, si must lock into that second slot.
Why are there no pronouns like ti (you) in this sentence?
