Questions & Answers about Čiji je ovo rukopis?
Why is the word for 'whose' written as čiji here instead of čija or čije?
The word čiji (whose) changes its endings like an adjective to match the gender, number, and case of the noun it modifies. Since it is asking about rukopis (handwriting), which is a masculine singular noun in the nominative case, we must use the masculine singular nominative form čiji.
Since rukopis is masculine, why does the sentence use the neuter pronoun ovo (this) instead of the masculine ovaj?
When you are introducing or pointing something out using the verb biti (to be), Croatian uses the fixed neuter singular pronouns ovo (this), to (that), or ono (that over there). It doesn't matter what the gender of the noun is! However, if you were saying 'this handwriting is bad', 'this' would act as a direct adjective and would need to match the noun, becoming ovaj rukopis.
Why is the verb je placed between čiji and ovo?
The verb je is an enclitic, which is a weak word that has no stress of its own. In Croatian, enclitics must generally sit in the second position in a sentence or clause. Since čiji is the first word, je has to step right in behind it, pushing the subject ovo later into the sentence.
Can rukopis mean anything else besides 'handwriting'?
