Questions & Answers about Ne palite svjetlo u sobi!
Why does this sentence use the imperfective verb palite instead of the perfective upalite?
In Croatian, negative commands (telling someone not to do something) almost always use the imperfective aspect. Even though turning on a light is a quick, one-time action, the negative word ne means you must use the imperfective palite. If it were a positive command (Turn on the light!), you would use the perfective: Upalite svjetlo!
Who exactly is being told not to turn on the light in this sentence?
The ending -ite on palite tells us this is either addressed to multiple people (you all) or it is the formal, polite you for a single person. If you were talking to one friend or family member, you would use the informal singular: Ne pali!
Since the light is the object being acted upon, shouldn't svjetlo change its ending for the accusative case?
It is actually in the accusative case! Svjetlo is a neuter noun (it ends in -o). For all neuter nouns in Croatian, the accusative case looks exactly the same as the nominative dictionary form. So it doesn't change shape when it becomes a direct object.
Why does the word for room change to sobi here instead of sobu?
