Question 1

How does the preposition po work in this sentence?

Accepted Answer

In this sentence, po is used with the locative case (sobi) to mean 'around' or 'all over' a space. When you describe an action that is scattered across an area, like gathering things that are spread out, you use po.

Question 2

Why does the word soba (room) change to sobi?

Accepted Answer

Because it comes directly after the preposition po, which requires the locative case when talking about locations. For feminine nouns ending in -a like soba, the locative ending is -i, making it sobi.

Question 3

The English translation says 'clothes' (plural), but why does odjeću take a singular ending?

Accepted Answer

In Croatian, odjeća is a collective noun. It translates more closely to 'clothing' or 'apparel'. It is always treated grammatically as a feminine singular noun, which is why it takes the feminine singular accusative ending -u (odjeću) when it is the direct object of the sentence.

Question 4

Why is the adjective prljavu instead of the dictionary form prljava?

Accepted Answer

Adjectives must match the noun they describe in gender, number, and case. Because odjeća is in the accusative case (it is the thing being gathered) and is feminine singular, the adjective prljava (dirty) must also take the feminine singular accusative ending, becoming prljavu.

Question 5

Is it necessary to keep the word mi (we) at the beginning of the sentence?

Accepted Answer

No, you can drop mi and simply say Skupljamo prljavu odjeću po sobi. The verb ending -mo in skupljamo already tells us the subject is 'we'. Including mi just adds a little extra emphasis, as if saying 'We are the ones gathering the clothes.'
