The Ski Resort and Rentals
When planning a winter trip, you will head to a ski resort (skijalište).
| This ski resort is closed today. | Ovo skijalište je danas zatvoreno. |
If you don't own your own equipment, you can look for a ski (skijaški) club or shop that offers equipment rental (najam).
| Our ski club offers free rental. | Naš skijaški klub nudi besplatan najam. |
Gearing Up
The essential equipment includes skis (skije) and ski boots (pancerice). When you need to express going somewhere to get or fetch something, use the preposition po followed by the accusative case.
| He went to the city to get the skis. | Otišao je u grad po skije. |
| I am going to the car to get the ski boots. | Idem po pancerice u auto. |
Another crucial piece of gear that connects the boot to the ski is the binding (vez).
| I think that your brother accidentally broke my binding. | Mislim da je tvoj brat slučajno slomio moj vez. |
Getting to the Top
To reach the top of the slopes, resorts use different types of lifts. A closed cable car is a žičara, while an open chairlift is a sjedežnica.
| This cable car leads to the top quickly. | Ova žičara brzo vodi na vrh. |
| The new chairlift is very modern and comfortable. | Nova sjedežnica je vrlo moderna i udobna. |
Snowboarding and Hazards
If skiing isn't for you, you can always ride a snowboard. Croatian uses the English loanword snowboard, treating it as a regular masculine noun.
| His new snowboard has an excellent design. | Njegov novi snowboard ima odličan dizajn. |
Finally, always be safe on the mountain and pay attention to weather warnings about an avalanche (lavina).
| A large avalanche fell yesterday morning. | Velika lavina je pala jučer ujutro. |
