Wh- questions (tko, gdje)

Asking "Where"

To ask about the location of objects or people, use the question word gdje (where). In simple questions, gdje is placed at the beginning of the sentence and is immediately followed by the short form of the verb "to be" (je for singular, su for plural).

Where is the key?
Gdje je ključ?
Where is the jacket?
Gdje je jakna?
Where are the gentleman and the lady?
Gdje su gospodin i gospođa?

Asking "Who" and "What"

To ask about a person's identity, use tko (who). To ask about objects or concepts, use što (what). Just like with gdje, the question word usually comes first and is followed right away by the verb.

Who is this gentleman?
Tko je ovaj gospodin?
Who is the teacher?
Tko je učitelj?
Who is this lady?
Tko je ova gospođa?

Connecting Questions

When you want to contrast two pieces of information or ask two related questions back-to-back in a single sentence, you can connect them using the conjunction a (and/but).

Where is the mother, and where is the father?
Gdje je majka, a gdje je otac?
Who is the brother, and who is the sister?
Tko je brat, a tko je sestra?
