Verbs of transit and brief actions (pro-)

The Prefix "Pro-"

The Croatian verbal prefix pro- is a versatile tool that changes the meaning of a base verb in one of three ways: doing an action for a brief time, transiting entirely through a space, or the sudden beginning of an action.

Brief and Leisurely Actions

When attached to verbs of motion like walking or driving, pro- often indicates that the action is done casually and for a short, limited duration. Instead of walking for transportation, you are taking a brief stroll.

I want to take a brief walk in the city.
Želim prošetati u gradu.
We took a short drive through the village.
Provozali smo se kroz selo.

Passing Through a Space

The most common spatial meaning of pro- is transiting through or past something. It describes motion that penetrates a barrier, navigates a crowd, or simply crosses a physical area from one end to another. You will frequently see these verbs paired with the preposition kroz (through).

The fast car rushed past through the street.
Brz auto je projurio kroz ulicu.
The boy ran through the courtyard.
Dječak je protrčao kroz dvorište.
A bird flew by above my head.
Ptica je proletjela iznad moje glave.

This "passing through" concept also applies to pushing your way through obstacles or breaking past physical barriers.

We must squeeze through the crowd.
Moramo se progurati kroz gužvu.
The sun broke through the clouds.
Sunce se probilo kroz oblake.

Sudden Inception

Finally, pro- can signify the sudden, initial breaking out of an action or state. A classic example is breaking a silence. When someone who has been quiet finally uses their voice, they "break through" into speech.

The man was silent, but he spoke up.
Muškarac je bio tih, ali je progovorio.
I don't want to speak up in this situation.
Ne želim progovoriti u ovoj situaciji.
