The Locative Relative Pronoun
To connect sentences using phrases like "the book in which" or "the topic about which", use the relative pronoun koji (which, that, who).
The pronoun must match the gender of the noun it refers to. Its case, however, is determined by its role in the new clause. When following the prepositions u (in) or o (about), the relative pronoun takes the locative case.
| Gender | Locative Form | Examples |
|---|---|---|
| Masculine & Neuter | kojem | u kojem (in which), o kojem (about which) |
| Feminine | kojoj | u kojoj (in which), o kojoj (about which) |
Masculine and Neuter Nouns: u kojem, o kojem
If the noun you are referring back to is masculine or neuter (such as roman, događaj, or pismo), use the locative form kojem.
| This is the novel in which the author describes his life. | Ovo je roman u kojem autor opisuje svoj život. |
| The letter in which he describes his fate is the oldest. | Pismo u kojem opisuje svoju sudbinu najstarije je. |
| Do you know if that is the event they are talking about on the show? | Znaš li je li to događaj o kojem pričaju u emisiji? |
Feminine Nouns: u kojoj, o kojoj
If the noun is feminine (such as tema, emisija, or regija), use the feminine locative form kojoj.
| That is the topic everyone is constantly discussing. | To je tema o kojoj svi stalno raspravljaju. |
| The show where they mention that event starts tonight. | Emisija u kojoj spominju taj događaj počinje večeras. |
| The village is in a region where there is never any snow. | Selo je u regiji u kojoj nikada nema snijega. |
