The Determiner "Svaki"
To say "every" or "each" in Croatian, use the universal determiner svaki.
Like an adjective, svaki must agree in gender, number, and case with the noun it modifies. In the nominative (subject) case, the forms are svaki (masculine), svaka (feminine), and svako (neuter).
| Every leaf is green. | Svaki list je zelen. |
| Every word is important. | Svaka riječ je važna. |
| Every village has a church. | Svako selo ima crkvu. |
"Svaki" as an Object
When used as a direct object (accusative case), the feminine svaka changes to svaku. For masculine inanimate nouns, svaki remains the same as its nominative form.
| I see every movement. | Vidim svaki pokret. |
| You must read every word. | Moraš pročitati svaku riječ. |
| I love every song. | Volim svaku pjesmu. |
"Svaki" with Prepositions
Svaki also takes the appropriate case ending in prepositional phrases. For example, with the preposition u (locative case), the masculine and neuter form becomes svakom.
| He sees a problem in every detail. | On vidi problem u svakom detalju. |
| She enjoys every journey. | Ona uživa u svakom putovanju. |
Following a preposition that takes the genitive case, like iza (behind), the feminine form becomes svake.
| Behind every picture is a story. | Iza svake slike je priča. |
