The Preposition "po" and the Locative Case
To describe things scattered, spilled, or spread across a surface, use the preposition po with the locative case.
| Someone scattered the toys across the whole room. | Netko je razbacao igračke po cijeloj sobi. |
| They scattered clothes across the bed. | Oni su razbacali odjeću po krevetu. |
| The children made a mess around the house. | Djeca su napravila nered po kući. |
Spilling Liquids
If a liquid spreads across a surface, use po with the locative case.
| Who spilled water across the table? | Tko je prolio vodu po stolu? |
| Someone spilled coffee over my laptop. | Netko je prolio kavu po mojem laptopu. |
Cleaning Up
The same grammar applies when gathering scattered items or wiping dust and stains across surfaces.
| We are gathering dirty clothes around the room. | Mi skupljamo prljavu odjeću po sobi. |
| You must wipe dust across the old closet. | Morate brisati prašinu po starom ormaru. |
| Now I have to wipe stains across the floor. | Sada moram brisati mrlje po podu. |
This also applies outdoors, like when trash is scattered around streets or parks.
| They must collect trash around the park. | Oni moraju skupljati smeće po parku. |
| Do not throw trash around the street! | Nemoj bacati smeće po ulici! |
