Spa Treatments and the Instrumental Case

When booking your wellness weekend, you will want to describe the specific therapies you want to try. To say you want a bath (kupka) or treatment (tretman) "with" a specific ingredient, you use the preposition s (or sa) followed by the instrumental case.

For example, if you want a bath with essential (eteričan) oils, ulja (oils) takes the instrumental plural ending to become uljima.

I want a warm bath with essential oils.
Želim toplu kupku s eteričnim uljima.

This rule applies to all kinds of wellness services, whether you are getting a treatment with healing (ljekovit) mud or a scrub (piling) with sea salt.

They offer a treatment with healing mud here.
Ovdje nude tretman s ljekovitim blatom.
I want to try that scrub with sea salt.
Želim probati onaj piling s morskom soli.

You also use s + the instrumental case to describe what someone is wearing, such as a cozy bathrobe (ogrtač).

The girl with the white robe is waiting for a massage.
Djevojka s bijelim ogrtačem čeka masažu.

The Croatian word for a spa is toplice. This is a "pluralia tantum" noun, meaning it is grammatically always plural, much like the English word "scissors."

To describe where different facilities are located within or around the spa, you will often use prepositions like pored (next to) and iza (behind). Both of these prepositions require the noun that follows them to be in the genitive case. So, toplice becomes toplica.

Next to the spa is a large forest.
Pored toplica je velika šuma.

Similarly, to say the sauna (sauna) is behind the pool (bazen), the pool takes the genitive ending -a to become bazena.

The sauna is behind the pool.
Sauna je iza bazena.

Let's look at one more example using the adjective for cosmetic or beauty (kozmetički).

The beauty salon is next to the main entrance.
Kozmetički salon je pored glavnog ulaza.

Feeling Relaxed: Using "Kao da"

A great way to describe the deeply relaxing effects of your spa visit is the phrase kao da, which means "as if" or "like."

You can pair this conjunction with verbs like izgledati (to look) or osjećati se (to feel) to express your post-treatment bliss.

I feel as if I am still in the sauna.
Osjećam se kao da sam još uvijek u sauni.
You look as if you go to the spa every week.
Izgledaš kao da svaki tjedan ideš u toplice.

The Healing Power of Water

Finally, no wellness weekend is complete without experiencing the local waters. The adjective for thermal is termalan.

After the thermal bath, I was very relaxed.
Nakon termalne kupke, bio sam jako opušten.
