Question tag (zar ne)

High-school reunions are the perfect setting for nostalgia and awkward small talk. When navigating these catch-ups, you'll often want to seek agreement or confirm facts with your old classmates.

The Universal Question Tag: "zar ne"

In English, question tags can be tricky because they must match the tense, the auxiliary verb, and the subject (e.g., "isn't it?", "didn't we?", "has he?").

In Croatian, this is incredibly simple. No matter who is acting or what tense you are using, you just append one invariant phrase to the end of your sentence: zar ne.

To turn any declarative statement into a question seeking confirmation, simply add a comma followed by zar ne. It translates to "right?", "isn't it?", or whatever English tag best fits the sentence.

This is our first gathering after high-school graduation, isn't it?
Ovo je naše prvo okupljanje nakon mature, zar ne?

Notice how it works seamlessly across different tenses and subjects:

We went to the same high school before high-school graduation, right?
Išli smo u istu gimnaziju prije mature, zar ne?
Ivan is balding and he gained weight, hasn't he?
Ivan je proćelav i udebljao se, zar ne?
Everyone feels awkwardness because he is boastful, don't they?
Svi osjećaju nelagodu jer je on hvalisav, zar ne?

Whether you are talking about the past, present, or what needs to happen next, zar ne is your universal tool for finding common ground.

Before we leave, we have to drink coffee, don't we?
Prije nego što odemo, moramo popiti kavu, zar ne?
