Past Counterfactual Conditions
When talking about changed history, missed opportunities, or alternate outcomes, we often use sentences like "If X had happened, Y would have happened." These describe conditions in the past that did not actually occur.
In Croatian, these counterfactual sentences are built by combining an "if" clause and a main "result" clause.
Building the Sentence
- The "If" Clause: To express "if" for a hypothetical past event, use the conjunction da followed by the regular past tense (perfekt).
- The Result Clause: The main clause, which describes what would have happened, uses the past conditional (kondicional prošli).
| If the ally had not arrived, we would have changed the course of history. | Da saveznik nije stigao, mi bismo bili promijenili tijek povijesti. |
| If the advisor had foreseen the crisis, we would have avoided the collapse. | Da je savjetnik predvidio krizu, mi bismo bili izbjegli krah. |
Clause Order and Enclitics
Just like in English, you can change the order of the clauses. You can start the sentence with the da condition, or you can lead with the hypothetical result.
When the sentence starts with the da clause, the main clause follows. The enclitics in the main clause (such as bismo) will attach to the first available word in that main clause—often a subject pronoun or a noun.
| If the advisor had changed his action, we would have succeeded. | Da je savjetnik promijenio svoj postupak, mi bismo bili uspjeli. |
If you swap the order and put the result clause first, the enclitics follow the normal rules for the past conditional, naturally slotting into the second position of the opening clause.
| At first, we would have lost everything if we had forgotten about caution. | Isprva bismo bili izgubili sve da smo zaboravili na oprez. |
Negation and Reflexive Verbs
You can freely negate either the "if" clause, the result clause, or both.
- In the "if" clause, simply use the negated past tense (e.g., nije zanemario).
- In the result clause, negate the conditional auxiliary (e.g., ne bi). Remember that a negated auxiliary is no longer an enclitic, meaning it does not need to hunt for the second position.
| If he had not neglected caution, he would not have lost his money. | Da on nije zanemario oprez, ne bi bio izgubio svoj novac. |
If the result clause features a reflexive verb, the reflexive pronoun se acts as an enclitic. It must take its place in the enclitic chain, grouping together with the conditional auxiliary.
| If they had not neglected the warning, the collapse would not have happened. | Da oni nisu zanemarili upozorenje, krah se ne bi bio dogodio. |
