Expressing Frequency with "put" and "puta"
In Croatian, to express how many "times" an action happens, use the noun put (which also means path). Depending on the preceding number or quantifier, use either the base form put or the crystallized genitive puta.
Using "put" (One and Ordinals)
Use the base form put for exactly one time (jedan put):
| The copyeditor read the layout one time. | Lektor je jedan put pročitao prijelom. |
Also use put after ordinal numbers like prvi (first), drugi (second), or treći (third):
| We are printing this novel for the first time. | Prvi put tiskamo ovaj roman. |
| The copyeditor saw the revised binding for the third time. | Lektor je treći put vidio prerađen uvez. |
Using "puta" (Other Numbers and Quantifiers)
For all other numbers, use the genitive form puta:
| We will reproduce this copy two times. | Umnožit ćemo ovaj primjerak dva puta. |
| The printing house increased the print run five times. | Tiskara je pet puta povećala nakladu. |
Also use puta after quantifiers and question words like koliko (how many), nekoliko (several), or više (more):
| How many times did you change the typesetting? | Koliko puta ste promijenili slog? |
| I went to the printing house several times with him. | Nekoliko puta sam išao u tiskaru s njim. |
