Introduction to verbal aspect

The Concept of Verbal Aspect

In Croatian, verbs come in pairs based on their "aspect." Aspect tells us how an action flows through time:

  • Imperfective verbs describe ongoing, continuous, or habitual actions (e.g., what you do "every day").
  • Perfective verbs describe singular, completed actions (e.g., finishing a task).

Creating Perfective Verbs

Often, a perfective verb is just the imperfective verb with a prefix added to the front. For example, čitati (to read) becomes pročitati, and pisati (to write) becomes napisati.

Notice how these examples contrast habitual actions with completed goals:

I always read, but today I want to read the letter.
Uvijek čitam, ali danas želim pročitati pismo.
He often writes, but he has never written a book.
On često piše, ali nikada nije napisao knjigu.

Daily Chores

When talking about chores like washing posuđe (dishes) or rublje (laundry), ongoing processes use the imperfective verbs: prati (to wash), kuhati (to cook), and čistiti (to clean). To emphasize that the chore was completely finished, use their perfective partners: oprati, skuhati, and očistiti.

Mother washes the dishes and laundry every day.
Majka pere posuđe i rublje svaki dan.
Sorry, I didn't wash the dishes.
Oprosti, nisam oprao posuđe.
The cook cooks soup every day, but yesterday he cooked meat.
Kuhar svaki dan kuha juhu, ali jučer je skuhao meso.
My head hurts, but I cleaned the room.
Boli me glava, ali očistio sam sobu.

Eating, Drinking, and Watching

The exact same pattern applies to consuming food and media. The imperfective verbs jesti (to eat), piti (to drink), and gledati (to watch) become pojesti, popiti, and pogledati when the action is brought to completion (like eating a whole cake or finishing a movie).

The son does not want to eat vegetables, but he ate the cake.
Sin ne želi jesti povrće, ali je pojeo kolač.
I am thirsty, I want to drink cold water.
Žedan sam, želim popiti hladnu vodu.
I must clean the room, but I want to watch a movie.
Moram čistiti sobu, ali želim pogledati film.
