In Croatian, most names change their endings depending on their grammatical case. However, female names ending in a consonant (such as Ines, Nives, Karmen, and Iris) are an exception: they are completely indeclinable. They remain exactly the same in every case, whether they are the subject or the recipient of an action.
| We must assign this task to Ines. | Moramo dodijeliti ovaj zadatak Ines. |
| Nives will delegate that stage to Iris. | Nives će delegirati tu etapu Iris. |
With Prepositions
Because these names never change, they stay in their base form even after prepositions that normally require case changes, such as s (with, Instrumental), o (about, Locative), or od (from, Genitive).
| I will communicate with Nives about the technical sector. | Komunicirat ću s Nives o tehničkom sektoru. |
| We talked about Karmen and her first stage. | Pričali smo o Karmen i njezinoj prvoj etapi. |
| This is the report from Iris, which is very technical. | Ovo je izvještaj od Iris, koji je vrlo tehnički. |
Full Names
Women's surnames also do not decline unless they end in "-a". When an indeclinable first name is combined with a surname ending in a consonant (like Horvat), the entire full name remains unchanged.
| We delegated the first part of the work to Ines Horvat. | Delegirali smo prvi dio posla Ines Horvat. |
| We must assign one technical task each to Nives and Karmen. | Moramo dodijeliti po jedan tehnički zadatak Nives i Karmen. |
