Clarifying Complex Statements

When discussing complex topics, you will often need to clarify your statements. We use reformulation markers like to jest and drugim riječima to signal that we are about to rephrase or simplify a point.

Literally meaning "that is," to jest is used to equate two things. It provides an immediate definition or a simpler alternative for a term you just used.

This is professional jargon, that is, a language that a layman does not understand.
Ovo je stručan žargon, to jest, jezik koji laik ne razumije.
This is an everyday word, that is, it does not need a definition.
Ovo je svakodnevna riječ, to jest, ne treba joj definicija.

For more extensive rephrasing, use drugim riječima ("in other words"). This marker introduces a complete summary or simplification of the previous thought.

I don't understand that jargon, in other words, you have to rephrase the sentence.
Ne razumijem taj žargon, drugim riječima, moraš preformulirati rečenicu.
In other words, this concept is impossible to simplify.
Drugim riječima, ovaj koncept je nemoguće pojednostaviti.
That is the problem with which I struggle, in other words, I must rephrase it.
