Impersonal Reporting with Se
To make impersonal statements like "It is stated that..." or "It is reported that...", use the third-person singular of a verb with the reflexive pronoun se. This is typically followed by the conjunction da (that).
For example, navoditi (to state) becomes navodi se da... (it is stated that...).
| It is stated that the minister is sick. | Navodi se da je ministar bolestan. |
| It is stated that the government will stop the reform. | Navodi se da će vlada zaustaviti reformu. |
Other verbs of communication and opinion follow the same pattern:
- izvještavati (to report) → izvještava se da...
- smatrati (to consider) → smatra se da...
- govoriti (to speak/say) → govori se da...
| It is reported that he has resigned. | Izvještava se da je dao ostavku. |
| It is considered that the reform is necessary. | Smatra se da je reforma potrebna. |
| It is said that the government is either bad or slow. | Govori se da je vlada ili loša ili spora. |
Speculation and Questions
When expressing uncertainty, use a verb like nagađati (to speculate). Since speculation involves unknown facts, it is often followed by question words like tko (who) or the phrase da li (whether) instead of da.
| It is speculated whether the minister will resign. | Nagađa se da li će ministar dati ostavku. |
| It is speculated who will form the new government. | Nagađa se tko će sastaviti novu vladu. |
Spreading Rumors
To discuss rumors, use the noun glasina (rumor) with the reflexive verb širiti se (to spread). In this phrasing, the rumor itself acts as the subject of the sentence.
| A rumor is spreading that he is lying. | Širi se glasina da on laže. |
| A rumor is spreading that the strike is either tomorrow or the day after tomorrow. | Širi se glasina da je štrajk ili sutra ili prekosutra. |
