Exceptive conditionals (osim ako)

Use osim ako (unless) to set a firm boundary or exception.

Osim ako takes a standard indicative verb (usually in the present or future tense). Always place a comma before osim ako when it follows the main clause.

That contract makes no sense, unless we add a new clause.
Taj ugovor nema smisla, osim ako dodamo novu klauzulu.

Negotiating Contracts

You will frequently use osim ako to firmly state your boundaries alongside formal business vocabulary like odredba (provision), raskinuti (to terminate), and valjan (valid).

The provision is clear, unless you have questions about it.
Odredba je jasna, osim ako imate pitanja o njoj.
We cannot sign the contract, unless you change that provision.
Ne možemo potpisati ugovor, osim ako promijenite tu odredbu.
We will have to terminate the contract, unless you pay the bill on time.
Morat ćemo raskinuti ugovor, osim ako platite račun na vrijeme.
Your signature is not valid, unless you bring an ID card.
Vaš potpis nije valjan, osim ako donesete osobnu iskaznicu.
This contract will not bind us, unless we add that annex.
Ovaj ugovor nas neće obvezivati, osim ako dodamo taj aneks.

Stating Consequences

While osim ako sets a condition, use tako da (so / so that) to state a direct consequence or result. Separate the clauses with a comma here too.

We cannot accept this clause, so we must negotiate about it.
Ne možemo prihvatiti ovu klauzulu, tako da moramo pregovarati o njoj.
The goods are bad, so we will look for a new offer.
Roba je loša, tako da ćemo tražiti novu ponudu.
