The Emphatic Future Tense
Usually, the Croatian future tense is formed with the short, unstressed enclitic forms of the verb htjeti (ću, ćeš, će...). However, when you want to express strong determination, insistence, or a firm decision, you use the full, independent forms of the verb.
| Pronoun | Full Form |
|---|
| ja | hoću |
| ti | hoćeš |
| on / ona / ono | hoće |
| mi | hoćemo |
| vi | hoćete |
| oni / one / ona | hoće |
Because these full forms literally mean "to want," using them to state what you will do adds a powerful layer of "I want to and I will."
Firm Decisions and Independence
You will often hear this emphatic structure when someone is asserting their independence, demonstrating strong resolve, or pushing back against resistance.
You can also use this tense in questions to express surprise or confirm someone's insistence, often combined with words like ipak (nevertheless / after all).
Passionate Resolutions
The emphatic future is perfect for scenarios involving defending what is yours or forging success. When combined with pronouns (like ja or mi), the determination is emphasized even further.
Notice in the next example how the emphatic hoćemo (we will) contrasts with the regular, factual future tense će biti (will be) later in the sentence.
