Questions & Answers about Hoću nastaviti sam!
Why use Hoću nastaviti instead of the normal future tense Nastavit ću?
The normal future tense uses the short form of the helper verb (ću). Using the full form hoću makes the statement emphatic. It adds a strong sense of determination, turning "I will continue" into "I will continue!" or "I want to continue!".
Does Hoću mean "I will" or "I want"?
It can mean both! The verb htjeti literally means "to want". In Croatian, expressing a strong desire to do something is also how you form the emphatic future tense. So this sentence can be translated as either "I will continue!" or "I want to continue!", depending on the exact context.
Why does nastaviti keep its final "i"? Doesn't the future tense usually drop it?
The final "i" is only dropped when an infinitive ending in "-ti" is placed immediately before a short-form helper verb (like in nastavit ću). Because hoću is a full-form verb and comes before the infinitive, nastaviti keeps its full ending.
I am a woman. Would I say this sentence exactly the same way?
Almost, but you need to change the last word. Sam means "alone" or "by myself" for a male speaker. A female speaker must change it to match her gender, saying Hoću nastaviti sama!
