During an event (tijekom)

To describe what happens "during" a specific period or event, use the preposition tijekom followed by the genitive case.

Feminine nouns

For most feminine nouns (like predstava or konferencija), form the genitive by changing the final -a to -e.

I was cold during the performance.
Tijekom predstave mi je bilo hladno.
Although I was tired, I listened during the conference.
Iako sam bio umoran, slušao sam tijekom konferencije.
During the workshop we learned a new skill.
Tijekom radionice naučili smo novu vještinu.

Masculine and neuter nouns

For masculine nouns ending in a consonant (like govor or seminar), add -a. For neuter nouns (like predavanje), change the final -o or -e to -a.

Everyone was silent during his speech.
Svi su šutjeli tijekom njegova govora.
During the lecture, students are not allowed to talk.
Tijekom predavanja studenti ne smiju razgovarati.
During the seminar, I learned a lot about history.
Tijekom seminara naučio sam puno o povijesti.

Long-term periods and events

Use tijekom with the exact same genitive rules to discuss longer stretches of time, such as a crisis (kriza), a campaign (kampanja), or your studies (studij).

During the crisis, people lost their jobs.
Tijekom krize ljudi su izgubili posao.
During the campaign, we visited many big cities.
Tijekom kampanje posjetili smo mnogo velikih gradova.
During his studies, he lived with his brother.
Tijekom studija živio je s bratom.
