Doing the Laundry

Doing the laundry requires specific vocabulary to navigate the household appliances and cleaning products involved. Let's look at the essentials for wash day.

Washing and Drying Machines

To get started, you will need to load your dirty laundry into the washing machine (perilica). After washing, you might transfer the clothes to a dryer (sušilica).

The washing machine and the dryer are in the bathroom.
Perilica i sušilica su u kupaonici.
I didn't put the dirty laundry in the washing machine.
Nisam stavio prljavo rublje u perilicu.

Detergents and Softeners

Before starting the wash, you must add soap. You can use liquid detergent (deterdžent) or washing powder (prašak).

You have to put powder or detergent in the washing machine.
Moraš staviti prašak ili deterdžent u perilicu.

For extra softness and a pleasant scent, don't forget to include the fabric softener (omekšivač).

Fabric softener gives the laundry a pleasant smell.
Omekšivač daje rublju ugodan miris.

Choosing the Right Cycle

Depending on what you are washing, from delicate shirts to heavy bedding (posteljina), you will need to choose the appropriate washing program (program).

Choose a short program for the dirty shirts.
Izaberi kratak program za prljave košulje.
I will wash the bedding tomorrow morning.
Oprat ću posteljinu sutra ujutro.

The spin cycle (centrifuga) is the final step in the machine that rapidly removes excess water from your clothes.

The spin cycle is very loud today.
Centrifuga je danas vrlo bučna.

Hanging and Ironing

If you are not using a dryer, you will hang your wet laundry up and secure the clothes using clothespins (the singular form is štipaljka, while the plural is štipaljke).

Do you need clothespins for the wet laundry?
Trebaju li ti štipaljke za mokro rublje?

Finally, to remove wrinkles from your clean clothes, you will need an iron (glačalo).

The iron is hot, be careful!
Glačalo je vruće, pazi!
