Dative and Locative Adjectives: Singular
In Croatian, adjectives in the dative and locative cases share the exact same endings. Their form depends on the gender of the noun they modify.
For feminine nouns in the singular, the adjective takes the ending -oj.
| I live in a dark and narrow street. | Živim u mračnoj i uskoj ulici. |
| We are walking towards the scary forest. | Hodamo prema strašnoj šumi. |
For masculine and neuter nouns, the adjective takes the ending -om. However, if the adjective's stem ends in a "soft" consonant (such as č, ć, š, ž, j, lj, nj), it takes -em instead.
| The children are swimming in the deep sea. | Djeca plivaju u dubokom moru. |
| The foreigner is talking about the best restaurant. | Stranac priča o najboljem restoranu. |
You will often mix these forms when a sentence involves multiple locations or recipients.
| I helped the strange foreigner in the narrow street. | Pomogao sam čudnom strancu u uskoj ulici. |
Dative and Locative Adjectives: Plural
In the plural, adjective agreement becomes even simpler. For all genders (masculine, feminine, and neuter), the dative and locative plural adjective ending is -im.
| There is no space in the narrow streets. | Nema mjesta u uskim ulicama. |
| We are looking forward to the best guests. | Mi se veselimo najboljim gostima. |
