Complex concessive clauses (unatoč tome što)

To describe successful outcomes that happen despite an obstacle, use the compound conjunctions unatoč tome što or usprkos tome što (despite / in spite of the fact that).

Both phrases mean the same thing and take standard indicative verbs. When you start with the obstacle, separate the concessive clause from the main clause with a comma.

Despite the fact that the soil is rocky, the farmers are working.
Unatoč tome što je tlo kamenito, poljoprivrednici rade.
In spite of the fact that it is very hot, this field is fertile.
Usprkos tome što je jako vruće, ovo polje je plodno.

Placing the Clause in the Middle

You can also state the main outcome first and introduce the obstacle in the second half of the sentence.

The weed is growing anyway despite the fact that there is no rain.
Korov svejedno raste unatoč tome što nema kiše.
We planted the seed in spite of the fact that we don't have fertilizer.
Zasadili smo sjeme usprkos tome što nemamo gnojivo.

Future Tense and Multiple Obstacles

These clauses work seamlessly across different tenses and can combine multiple obstacles at once.

This tree will survive in spite of the fact that the ground is rocky.
Ovo drvo će opstati usprkos tome što je tlo kamenito.
The plants are growing despite the fact that there is no fertilizer or irrigation.
Biljke rastu unatoč tome što nema gnojiva ni navodnjavanja.
