Questions & Answers about هيا يا تلاميذ، ولنستمتع بالرحلة!
The word for pupils (تلاميذ) does not have the definite article (ال) attached to it. Why is that?
After the calling word يا (oh / hey), the noun being directly addressed usually drops the definite article. Even though the speaker is addressing specific pupils, we say يا تلاميذ instead of adding ال.
How exactly does the word ولنستمتع translate to 'let us enjoy'?
It is made of three parts: the conjunction و (and), the prefix لـ (let / must), and the verb نستمتع (we enjoy). The لـ here is called the Lam of Command. When attached to a present tense verb in the 'we' form, it translates to 'let us' do something.
How is the prefix لـ pronounced in ولنستمتع?
Normally, the Lam of Command is pronounced with an 'ee' sound (li-). However, a special pronunciation rule applies when it comes immediately after و (and) or ف (so / then): it loses its vowel and takes a sukoon (a pause). Therefore, it is pronounced 'wal-nastamti' instead of 'wa-li-nastamti'.
Why is there a بـ attached to the word for the trip (الرحلة)?
In Arabic, the verb 'to enjoy', استمتع, must always be followed by the preposition بـ (bi) to introduce the thing you are enjoying. You cannot use a direct object here, so literally, the sentence says 'let us enjoy by the trip'.
