Questions & Answers about هذا هو الكتاب.
Why is the word هو ("he" or "it") used in the middle of this sentence?
In Arabic, there is no present tense word for "is." Usually, you just put words together. But because الكتاب ("the book") has ال ("the"), just saying هذا الكتاب would mean the fragment "This book...". To make it the complete sentence "This is the book", we insert the pronoun هو as a separator.
What would the sentence mean if we completely removed هو?
If you say هذا الكتاب, it translates to the phrase "This book" (for example, "This book is heavy"). If you want to say "This is a book" without using هو, you must drop the "the" and say هذا كتاب.
If we were talking about a feminine word instead of a book, how would the sentence change?
You would need to change both the word for "this" and the separator pronoun to their feminine forms. For example, "This is the picture" (صورة) would be هذه هي الصورة using هذه (feminine "this") and هي ("she/it").
Why does هذا sound like it has a long "aa" sound after the first letter, even though there is no alif (ا) written there?
The word هذا is a special exception in Arabic spelling. It contains a hidden or "dagger" alif that is pronounced but not written in standard text. It is always pronounced "haathaa".
