In Modern Standard Arabic, when you want to strongly deny something or ask a probing question, you can add an extra word to emphasize "any" or "none at all."

### The Redundant Preposition (مِن الزائدة)

To add emphasis to a question or a negative statement, Arabic uses the preposition **من** immediately before an indefinite noun. In Arabic grammar, this is called the "redundant" preposition (مِن الزائدة) because removing it would leave a grammatically complete, though less emphatic, sentence. It translates closely to "any" in English.

When asking questions—particularly with **هل**—adding **من** before the noun emphasizes the inquiry, akin to asking "Is there *any*...?" or "Is there a single...?"

### Absolute Denials

In negative statements using particles like **ما**, adding **من** before the indefinite noun expresses an absolute denial, meaning "There is absolutely no...". Because **من** is a preposition, the noun that follows it must be in the genitive case (taking a *kasrah* or *kasratayn* ending).

This structure is highly common in strong claims or interrogations, such as denying suspicion, doubt, or need.

You can also use this emphatic **من** with the negative verb **ليس**. When denying that someone possesses something, insert **من** right before the possessed noun to strongly deny any trace of it.

### Seeing the endings

This course writes Arabic the way books and newspapers print it, without the short-vowel marks, so the ending this lesson is about is usually something you hear in the audio but cannot see in the drills. Here are some of them with every vowel written out:

After this من the noun is genitive, with a kasratayn: **مَانِعٍ**, **شُبْهَةٍ**, **رَيْبٍ**, **ذَنْبٍ**. It keeps that ending even though it is really the subject (*there is no doubt*), and a noun joined to it with أو follows it: **أَوْ خَطِيئَةٍ**. Compare **فَتَاةٌ خَائِفَةٌ** in the last drill, ordinary nominatives.
