Thai Digits ๐–๙ and Modern Arabic Numerals

Thai has its own decimal digits, ๐ ๑ ๒ ๓ ๔ ๕ ๖ ๗ ๘ ๙, alongside the internationally familiar digits 0–9, often called Arabic numerals in Thai usage. Both sets are normal in present-day Thailand. Choosing between them is usually a matter of genre and house style, not a difference in mathematical value.

Thai digits are independent spacing characters, not vowel signs or combining marks. They do not join a consonant cluster, carry a tone mark, or change the pronunciation of a neighboring syllable. What you say depends on the number's function: a quantity is read as a number, while a phone number, code, or identifier may be read digit by digit.

The ten forms

The characters occupy the continuous Unicode range U+0E50–U+0E59. Their values match the decimal digits 0–9 exactly.

The Unicode cell for ๗ is U+0E57; the adjacent Thai word in the table is its name, not part of its code. Fonts can vary the details of loops and stroke angles, so learn the identity of the whole digit rather than matching one typeface pixel by pixel.

Whole numbers use place value

Thai digits form ordinary base-ten numbers. In a quantity, ๒๕ is not normally read as isolated “two, five”; it is ยี่สิบห้า “twenty-five.” The written digits tell you the value, while Thai number morphology supplies the spoken form.

The digit ๑ is therefore not tied to one spoken shape. It is หนึ่ง when isolated or in many positions, commonly omitted before สิบ in 10, and read เอ็ด at the end of numbers such as 11 and 21. That variation belongs to number grammar, not to the glyph.

Identifiers are often read digit by digit

Phone numbers, room numbers, document codes, registration numbers, and passwords are identifiers rather than quantities. Speakers often read each digit separately, though established grouping conventions can differ by type of identifier and institution.

Where Thai digits are common

Thai digits are not “more grammatical,” and Arabic numerals are not foreign intrusions to be avoided. Arabic numerals dominate many prices, addresses, schedules, interfaces, scientific texts, and informal messages because they are internationally interoperable and immediately recognized.

ASCII digits are the natural choice in these ordinary modern examples. The numerals coexist with Thai words without creating a new register of grammar.

Consistency and mixed conventions

Do not mix digit sets inside one uninterrupted numeral merely for decoration. A form such as Thai ๑ followed by Arabic 2 is visually confusing and can break validation, search, or machine parsing. Mixing complete numerals in a document may be justified—for example, Thai digits in a quoted historical title and Arabic digits in a URL—but it should follow an explicit house style.

Decimal points, commas, slashes, colons, percent signs, and currency symbols normally use international punctuation around either digit set. The punctuation is independent of the Thai digits. Software must nevertheless accept the intended set deliberately: a field restricted to ASCII digits may reject ๐–๙ even though a human sees valid numbers.

Reading shape, syllables, and tone

The digit itself has no tone. Its spoken name is an ordinary Thai syllable or word whose spelling carries tone information: สี่ begins with high-class ส and has ไม้เอก; ห้า has leading high-class ห and ไม้โท; เก้า uses a preposed vowel and ไม้โท. Saying that the written digit “has a tone” reverses the relationship. The number word has a lexical tone; the numeral is a logographic symbol for its value.
