Obsolete ฃ and ฅ, Historical Spellings, and OCR Traps

The traditional Thai alphabet contains 44 consonant letters, but two— and —are obsolete in ordinary modern spelling. Learners still encounter them in alphabet charts, Unicode menus, historical inscriptions, facsimiles, decorative lettering, and imperfect OCR. Recognizing them is therefore useful even though producing them in present-day words is normally wrong.

The important distinction is between reading historical evidence and writing modern Thai. In an archival transcription, preserve what the source actually has. In a contemporary sentence, use the established modern spelling with ข or ค.

Identity, class, and modern replacement

Both obsolete letters are full consonant characters. They occupy their own alphabetic and Unicode positions; neither is a damaged form or font variant of its modern neighbor.

LetterTraditional nameUnicodeClassModern functional neighborStatus
ฃ ขวด, kho khuatU+0E03 THAI CHARACTER KHO KHUAThighข, high classobsolete in ordinary spelling
ฅ คน, kho khonU+0E05 THAI CHARACTER KHO KHONlowค, low classobsolete in ordinary spelling

The keyword after each letter uses its modern spelling in conventional alphabet naming: ขวด “bottle” and คน “person.” Historical sources may spell cognate words with the obsolete initial itself, but a modern alphabet label and a diplomatic historical spelling are different objects.

เด็ก ๆ ท่องว่า ก ไก่ ข ไข่ ฃ ขวด

dek dek thong wa ko kai kho khai kho khuat

The children recite, “ko kai, kho khai, kho khuat.” (alphabet-recitation context)

พจนานุกรมฉบับนี้ยังเรียง ฃ ไว้หลัง ข

photchananukrom chabap ni yang riang kho khuat wai lang kho khai

This dictionary still orders ฃ after ข. (academic/reference context)

💡
“Obsolete” does not mean “nonexistent.” The characters are valid Unicode and meaningful in historical or metalinguistic text. It means they are not selected to spell ordinary modern words.

Why the two letters disappeared

Early Thai writing distinguished letters that later converged in pronunciation and spelling function. Historical evidence suggests that ฃ and ฅ once represented sounds distinct from ข and ค, though the precise phonetic reconstruction is debated among scholars. By modern Central Thai, no productive sound contrast requires the extra letters.

Thai typewriter design also excluded ฃ and ฅ when keyboard space was limited, reinforcing their practical disappearance from modern composition. It is too simple, however, to claim that a keyboard single-handedly abolished two healthy phonemes. Sound merger, declining written use, spelling standardization, education, and technology interacted over time.

The class alignment made replacement structurally economical: high-class ฃ yielded to high-class ข, while low-class ฅ yielded to low-class ค. Because the replacements stay in the same class, the consonant-class input to the tone rules is preserved in the corresponding modern spelling.

The three consonant classes page shows where both historical letters sit in the complete inventory, while paired low consonants explains the class relationship behind the modern ค series.

นักวิชาการถอดข้อความตามอักขรวิธีเดิมทุกตัว

nak wichakan thot khokhwam tam akkharawithi doem thuk tua

The researcher transcribes every character according to the original orthography. (academic)

บรรณาธิการทำฉบับอ่านง่ายด้วยการสะกดแบบปัจจุบัน

bannathikan tham chabap an ngai duai kan sakot baep patchuban

The editor creates an easy-reading edition using modern spelling. (formal publishing context)

These are two legitimate editorial products. A diplomatic transcription (academic/archival) preserves character distinctions; a normalized reading edition modernizes them and should say so. Silently switching policies from word to word damages the evidence.

Historical spellings and modern readings

Sukhothai-period inscriptions contain spellings such as ฃึ้น, เฃ้า, ฅวาม, and ฅำ, corresponding to modern ขึ้น, เข้า, ความ, and คำ. These examples belong to historical discussion, not to present-day orthographic variation.

Historical formModern formModern RTGSMeaning
ฃึ้นขึ้นkhuenrise; go up
เฃ้าเข้าkhaoenter; inward
ฅวามความkhwamnominalizing element; matter
ฅำคำkhamword; utterance

Notice the display order in เฃ้า: historical ฃ is the onset even though the vowel เ appears to its left, and the tone mark belongs to the whole syllable. A learner who reads strictly from left to right may miss the consonant; an OCR engine may instead turn ฃ into modern ข without recording that it normalized the source.

ในจารึกมีรูป เฃ้า ซึ่งตรงกับคำปัจจุบันว่า เข้า

nai charuek mi rup khao sueng trong kap kham patchuban wa khao

The inscription has the form เฃ้า, corresponding to modern เข้า. (academic)

รูป ฅวาม ในเอกสารเก่าตรงกับคำว่า ความ

rup khwam nai ekkasan kao trong kap kham wa khwam

The form ฅวาม in the old document corresponds to ความ. (academic)

The RTGS line supplies a modern reading aid. It cannot recover whether the source had ฃ versus ข or ฅ versus ค because those historical contrasts are absent from RTGS and from ordinary modern Central Thai pronunciation.

Tone calculation remains structural

ฃ is traditionally high class, just like its modern replacement ข. ฅ is low class, like ค. In a historical form, class still combines with tone marks, syllable type, and vowel length; the obsolete letter does not itself mean “old tone” or “special pronunciation.”

Consider เฃ้า analytically: เ and า form the written vowel pattern เ–า around the high-class initial ฃ, and ้ is mai tho. That vowel pattern represents /aw/, a live rime ending in /w/. A modern reading edition writes เข้า. The class remains high, so modernization does not replace a tone-rule category with a different one.

Consider historical ฅำ: ฅ is low class and ำ supplies an am-type live rime. The modern form คำ retains low class with ค. RTGS kham records neither consonant identity nor tone, which is why it is unsafe as a reconstruction tool.

ครูอธิบายว่า ฃ เป็นอักษรสูง ส่วน ฅ เป็นอักษรต่ำ

khru athibai wa kho khuat pen akson sung suan kho khon pen akson tam

The teacher explains that ฃ is high class, whereas ฅ is low class. (educational)

การแทน ฅ ด้วย ค ยังคงชั้นพยัญชนะเดิม

kan thaen kho khon duai kho khwai yang khong chan phayanchana doem

Replacing ฅ with ค preserves the original consonant class. (academic)

💡
Do not infer pronunciation from an obsolete glyph alone. First establish the edition's period and transcription policy; then analyze onset class, vowel, final, and tone mark as a syllable.

OCR traps: classify before correcting

Historical print and degraded scans make ฃ resemble ข and ฅ resemble ค. OCR may modernize a genuine historical form, invent an obsolete letter in ordinary modern prose, or confuse the character with an unrelated damaged glyph. A global search-and-replace is unsafe because the “right” output depends on the source.

Use three tests:

  1. Genre: Is this an inscription, facsimile, historical edition, alphabet chart, or modern document?
  2. Image evidence: What strokes are actually visible at high resolution?
  3. Language evidence: Does the candidate produce an attested word and a coherent syllable?

ผู้ตรวจแก้เทียบผลโอซีอาร์กับภาพต้นฉบับ

phu truat kae thiap phon o si a kap phap tonchabap

The proofreader compares the OCR output with the source image. (formal/technical)

คนขับรถต้องระวังทางแคบข้างหน้า

khon khap rot tong rawang thang khaep khang na

Drivers must be careful of the narrow road ahead. (modern road-safety context)

The sentence is a useful modern control: คน begins with ค and ขับ begins with ข. An OCR output containing ฅ or ฃ there is almost certainly a recognition error unless the text intentionally uses archaizing typography. The context, not mere resemblance, licenses correction.

Decorative logos sometimes use ฅ as a visual symbol for “person” (stylized/branding). That creative use does not revive ฅ as the standard initial of คน. Likewise, an alphabet poster can display both letters accurately without implying that learners should spell modern words with them.

Formal restrictions and responsible quotation

Use ฃ and ฅ in direct historical quotations, diplomatic transcriptions, linguistic discussion, alphabet charts, filenames that reproduce an artifact, and deliberate artistic wordplay. Label historical material clearly. Use ข and ค in new neutral, informal, formal, governmental, and academic prose unless the obsolete letter itself is the subject.

When quoting a source, do not “correct” its spelling inside the quotation without notation. When paraphrasing it for general readers, modernize consistently and retain the original in a note if the distinction matters. This makes both readability and scholarship honest.

Common Mistakes

1. Using ฅ to spell modern คน

❌ ฅนนี้กำลังรอรถเมล์

Incorrect modern spelling — ฅ is obsolete in ordinary prose.

✅ คนนี้กำลังรอรถเมล์

khon ni kamlang ro rot me

Correct — this person is waiting for the bus.

2. Using ฃ to spell modern ขวด

❌ ขอซื้อน้ำหนึ่งฃวดครับ

Incorrect modern spelling — ขวด is written with ข.

✅ ขอซื้อน้ำหนึ่งขวดครับ

kho sue nam nueng khuat khrap

Correct — I'd like to buy one bottle of water. (polite; male speaker)

3. Modernizing an archival transcription silently

❌ ผู้ถอดจารึกเปลี่ยนอักษรเก่าโดยไม่ลงหมายเหตุ

Incorrect scholarly method — the transcriber changes old letters without a note.

✅ ผู้ถอดจารึกรักษารูปเดิมและอธิบายคำปัจจุบัน

phu thot charuek raksa rup doem lae athibai kham patchuban

Correct — the transcriber preserves the original form and explains the modern word. (academic)

4. Assuming OCR normalization proves the source spelling

❌ โปรแกรมอ่านเป็น ข จึงสรุปว่าต้นฉบับไม่มี ฃ

Incorrect inference — an OCR output of ข does not prove the source lacked ฃ.

✅ ต้องตรวจภาพต้นฉบับก่อนระบุว่าเป็น ข หรือ ฃ

tong truat phap tonchabap kon rabu wa pen kho khai rue kho khuat

Correct — inspect the source image before identifying ข or ฃ.

5. Treating the obsolete letters as tone marks

❌ ฃ ทำให้ทุกพยางค์มีเสียงสูง

Incorrect — high-class ฃ does not automatically give every syllable a high tone.

✅ ฃ เป็นพยัญชนะชั้นสูง แต่เสียงวรรณยุกต์ขึ้นกับทั้งพยางค์

kho khuat pen phayanchana chan sung tae siang wannayuk khuen kap thang phayang

Correct — ฃ is high class, but tone depends on the whole syllable.

Key Takeaways

ฃ (U+0E03) is high class and ฅ (U+0E05) is low class. Both remain valid characters for historical and metalinguistic work but are obsolete in ordinary modern spelling, where ข and ค perform their functions. Preserve genuine source forms in archival transcription, modernize transparently in reading editions, and never let OCR appearance or RTGS erase the difference between textual evidence and modern pronunciation.
