ไม้โท ้ is the second written tone mark, but it is not a universal “falling-tone symbol.” It gives a falling tone with mid- and high-class initials and a high tone with low-class initials in standard Central Thai.
That two-way outcome matters in very common words: ป้า “aunt” is falling, ข้าว “rice” is falling, but ม้า “horse” and ร้อน “hot” are high. The mark is identical. Consonant class completes the instruction.
The complete ไม้โท pattern
| Controlling consonant class | Tone with ้ | Examples |
|---|---|---|
| mid | falling | ป้า, บ้าน, ได้ |
| high | falling | ข้าว, เสื้อ, ห้อง |
| low | high | ม้า, ค้า, ร้อน |
The traditional tone names can confuse English speakers because ไม้โท literally contains the name of the falling tone, เสียงโท. That correspondence holds in the mid- and high-class rows, but not in the low-class row. There, ไม้โท produces เสียงตรี, the high tone.
Mid class plus ไม้โท: falling tone
With a mid-class onset, ไม้โท gives a falling contour. Start in the upper part of your range and let the pitch fall clearly; do not substitute loudness or heavy stress for pitch movement.
ป้า
pa
aunt; older female adult — falling tone (isolated reading)
ป้าจะมาถึงตอนบ่ายค่ะ
pa cha ma thueng ton bai kha
Auntie will arrive this afternoon. (polite, female speaker)
บ้านหลังนี้อยู่ใกล้ตลาดครับ
ban lang ni yu klai talat khrap
This house is near the market. (polite, male speaker)
ป in ป้า and บ in บ้าน are mid class. Both syllables are live, but their live status is not why they fall: the decisive marked combination is mid class plus ไม้โท.
The common word ได้ illustrates why visual order must be analyzed rather than sounded out linearly. The preposed ไ belongs to the vowel; mid-class ด is the onset; ้ marks the syllable. The spoken order begins with /d/, not with the vowel sign drawn first.
พรุ่งนี้มาเร็วหน่อยได้ไหมครับ
phrung ni ma reo noi dai mai khrap
Could you come a little earlier tomorrow? (polite, male speaker)
High class plus ไม้โท: also falling tone
High-class initials converge with mid-class initials in this row: both produce falling tone.
ข้าว
khao
rice; meal — falling tone (isolated reading)
เสื้อตัวนี้ซักเครื่องได้ไหมคะ
suea tua ni sak khrueang dai mai kha
Can this shirt be machine-washed? (polite, female speaker)
ห้องข้างบนยังว่างครับ
hong khang bon yang wang khrap
The room upstairs is still available. (polite, male speaker)
ข, ส, and ห are high class, so ข้าว, เสื้อ, and ห้อง all have falling tone. Their vowels and finals differ, but those rime differences do not split the ordinary marked rule.
Low class plus ไม้โท: high tone
Low-class initials shift ไม้โท to high tone. Aim for a pitch that rises toward or stays in the upper part of the range. In natural Bangkok speech, the exact contour varies with speaker and sentence position; what must remain is its lexical separation from falling tone.
ม้า
ma
horse — high tone (isolated reading)
ร้านนี้ค้าส่งเฉพาะวันธรรมดา
ran ni kha song chapho wan thammada
This shop sells wholesale only on weekdays.
น้องบอกว่าอาหารยังร้อนอยู่ค่ะ
nong bok wa ahan yang ron yu kha
My younger sibling says the food is still hot. (polite, female speaker)
ค in ค้า, น in น้อง, and ร in ร้อน are low class, so each marked syllable has high tone. Learners who equate ้ with falling tone often flatten this entire row into the wrong category.
ข้าวจานนี้ร้อนมากครับ
khao chan ni ron mak khrap
This plate of rice is very hot. (polite, male speaker)
A near-minimal class contrast: ข้า and ค้า
High-class ข and low-class ค both represent aspirated /kh/ initially. Add the same long vowel and the same ไม้โท, and consonant class alone changes the tone:
| Word | Class | Tone | Meaning and register |
|---|---|---|---|
| ข้า | high | falling | “I; servant” (literary/archaic as ordinary self-reference) |
| ค้า | low | high | “trade; sell commercially” (neutral) |
RTGS writes both as kha. It supplies neither the tone nor the vowel length, and therefore cannot preserve the contrast.
ข้าจะกลับมาอีกครั้ง
kha cha klap ma ik khrang
I shall return again. (literary/archaic self-reference)
ครอบครัวนี้ค้าขายมาหลายรุ่นแล้ว
khropkhrua ni kha khai ma lai run laeo
This family has been in trade for many generations.
The first sentence belongs in historical drama or elevated fiction, not neutral modern conversation. The second is ordinary modern usage. Register changes where you encounter ข้า, but it does not change its tone rule.
Live, dead, short, and long under a written mark
You should still identify live/dead status and vowel length because they are part of accurate syllable parsing. Yet in the regular ไม้โท chart, they do not create separate tone outcomes. Low-class ม้า is live and high; low-class โน้ต is dead and high. The same class-plus-mark result survives the rime difference.
ช่วยส่งโน้ตการประชุมให้ผมด้วยครับ
chuai song not kanprachum hai phom duai khrap
Please send me the meeting notes. (polite, male speaker)
โน้ต is a conventional loanword spelling. Its long vowel and final /t/ make it dead, but low-class น plus ไม้โท yields high tone. This is why the reliable sequence is to parse all four inputs and then apply the marked row, not to let “dead” automatically trigger an unmarked rule.
Tone control in complex onsets
The consonant directly under ้ is not always the consonant whose class controls the tone. In the true cluster กล้า, the mark is placed over ล, but initial ก is mid class and controls the falling tone. In หน้า, leading ห gives the following น high-class behavior, so หน้า is falling even though plain น is low class.
เธอกล้าพูดต่อหน้าทุกคน
thoe kla phut to na thuk khon
She dared to speak in front of everyone.
The cluster tone guide and the page on transferred class separate these onset types. At this stage, the important discipline is to identify the controlling onset before consulting the ไม้โท row.
Common Mistakes
1. Reading every ้ as falling tone
❌ ม้าเป็นเสียงโทเพราะมีไม้โท
Incorrect — low-class ม plus ไม้โท produces high tone.
✅ ม้าเป็นเสียงตรีเพราะ ม เป็นอักษรต่ำ
ma pen siang tri phro mo pen akson tam
Correct — ม้า has high tone because ม is low class.
2. Missing the contrast inside ข้าวร้อน
❌ ข้าวกับร้อนใช้เสียงโทเหมือนกัน
Incorrect — the two initials belong to different classes.
✅ ข้าวเสียงโทแต่ร้อนเสียงตรี
khao siang tho tae ron siang tri
Correct — ข้าว is falling, but ร้อน is high.
3. Letting a dead final cancel the marked rule
❌ โน้ตต้องคำนวณเหมือนคำตายที่ไม่มีไม้โท
Incorrect — its written mark selects the marked low-class row.
✅ โน้ตใช้อักษรต่ำกับไม้โทจึงเป็นเสียงตรี
not chai akson tam kap mai tho chueng pen siang tri
Correct — low class plus ไม้โท gives โน้ต a high tone.
4. Choosing class from the letter below the mark
❌ กล้าใช้ชั้นอักษรของ ล
Incorrect — ล is second in the true cluster, not the class controller.
✅ กล้าใช้ ก อักษรกลางควบคุมเสียงโท
kla chai ko akson klang khuapkhum siang tho
Correct — mid-class ก controls the falling tone in กล้า.
Key Takeaways
ไม้โท gives falling tone with mid- and high-class onsets, but high tone with low-class onsets. Live/dead status and vowel length remain necessary for parsing, yet they do not split this marked row. Resolve clusters and leading consonants before naming the class, and treat RTGS as a broad reading aid that omits the contrast you are learning.
