Tone Outcomes with ไม้เอก ่

ไม้เอก ่ is traditionally called the “first tone mark,” but it does not mean “low tone” by itself. In standard Central Thai, a syllable with ไม้เอก is low when its controlling initial is mid or high class and falling when that initial is low class.

English punctuation trains the eye to treat one sign as one instruction. Thai tone spelling is different: the mark selects a row within a consonant-class system. Its position is visible, but its spoken result comes from the mark and the onset class together.

The complete ไม้เอก pattern

Controlling consonant classTone with ่Examples
midlowป่า, เก่า, จ่าย
highlowข่า, ไข่, ข่าว
lowfallingค่า, แม่, พ่อ

The mid- and high-class rows converge on the same low tone; the low-class row produces falling tone. These are the only two regular outputs of ไม้เอก. The mark does not create mid, high, or rising tone in standard native tone spelling.

💡
When you see ่, say the class before the tone: “mid + ไม้เอก = low,” “high + ไม้เอก = low,” or “low + ไม้เอก = falling.” Naming both inputs breaks the one-mark/one-tone habit.

Mid class plus ไม้เอก: low tone

Mid-class initials include ก จ ฎ ฏ ด ต บ ป อ. With ไม้เอก, the regular result is low tone.

ป่า

pa

forest — low tone (isolated reading)

เราไปเดินป่ากันตอนเช้าดีกว่า

rao pai doen pa kan ton chao di kwa

We'd better go hiking in the morning.

ร้านเก่าแถวนี้ย้ายไปแล้วครับ

ran kao thaeo ni yai pai laeo khrap

The old shop around here has moved. (polite, male speaker)

ป controls the tone of ป่า; ก controls the tone of เก่า. Both are mid class, so ่ gives low tone. A useful pitch target is to begin in the lower half of your comfortable range and remain low or fall slightly. Do not add creaky voice deliberately; speakers vary in phonation, while the lexical contrast is chiefly pitch.

High class plus ไม้เอก: also low tone

High-class initials take the same low-tone result with ไม้เอก. This overlap is a feature of the system, not a contradiction.

ข่า

kha

galangal — low tone (isolated reading)

แม่ใส่ข่าในต้มข่าไก่ค่ะ

mae sai kha nai tom kha kai kha

Mom puts galangal in chicken coconut soup. (polite, female speaker)

ข่าวนี้เพิ่งออกเมื่อเช้าครับ

khao ni phoeng ok muea chao khrap

This news only came out this morning. (polite, male speaker)

ข is high class in both ข่า and ข่าว. The tone is low even though the words differ in rime. Once a valid tone mark is present, live/dead status and vowel length no longer divide the ordinary ไม้เอก table. You still analyze the rime to read the vowel and final correctly, but class plus mark determines the tone.

Low class plus ไม้เอก: falling tone

With a low-class initial, the same written mark produces falling tone. Begin relatively high and let the pitch drop clearly through the voiced portion of the syllable.

ค่า

kha

value; fee — falling tone (isolated reading)

ค่าโดยสารรวมค่ากระเป๋าแล้วหรือยังคะ

kha doisan ruam kha krapao laeo rue yang kha

Does the fare already include the baggage fee? (polite, female speaker)

พ่อกำลังรออยู่หน้าบ้านครับ

pho kamlang ro yu na ban khrap

Dad is waiting in front of the house. (polite, male speaker)

ค and พ are low class, so ค่า and พ่อ are falling, not low. This is the central contrast of the page: ข่า and ค่า share the same broad consonant and vowel in modern speech, and RTGS writes both as kha, but high-class ข with ่ gives low tone while low-class ค with ่ gives falling tone.

ข่าถุงนี้ราคาเท่าไร รวมค่าส่งหรือยังคะ

kha thung ni rakha thaorai ruam kha song rue yang kha

How much is this bag of galangal? Does that include shipping? (polite, female speaker)

In connected speech, ข่า and ค่า remain distinct even when neither pitch movement is exaggerated. Listen for the low target of ข่า against the high-to-low movement of ค่า. RTGS erases exactly the contrast being practiced.

💡
ข่า “galangal” and ค่า “value; fee” are a near-perfect class contrast. Both are aspirated kha in RTGS and both carry ่; only the consonant class tells you low versus falling tone.

Live/dead status and length: still analyze them, but do not let them replace the mark rule

The full tone algorithm always begins by identifying the onset, vowel, and final. That prevents syllable-boundary and consonant-value errors. However, for an ordinary syllable carrying ไม้เอก, the unmarked live/dead branches do not override the marked table.

Compare low-class แม่, a live syllable ending in a long vowel, with the (regional: Isan; also widespread colloquially) word แซ่บ, a dead syllable ending in /p/. Both carry ไม้เอก and both have falling tone under their established pronunciations. The regional label matters because แซ่บ entered broad Central Thai colloquial use from Lao/Isan; it is not neutral formal vocabulary.

อาหารร้านนี้แซ่บมาก

ahan ran ni saep mak

The food at this restaurant is intensely flavorful. (informal; originally Isan usage)

Length remains lexical: it helps you pronounce the word and can distinguish meanings. It simply is not an extra tone branch once ไม้เอก supplies the marked rule. For the four-input workflow, see The Four Inputs to a Written Tone.

The mark's visual position does not identify the controlling class

In a simple onset, ่ appears above the onset consonant or above an upper vowel sign associated with it. In a true cluster, however, the mark is conventionally placed over the second consonant even though the first consonant controls the class. For example, in เปลี่ยน, the mark is visually associated with ล, but mid-class ป begins the cluster and controls the low tone.

เราเปลี่ยนเวลาเป็นบ่ายโมงได้ไหมครับ

rao plian wela pen bai mong dai mai khrap

Could we change the time to 1 PM? (polite, male speaker)

Do not simply look under the mark and classify that letter. Resolve whether the onset is a true cluster, a false cluster, or a leading-consonant construction first. Dedicated cluster tone rules handle those structures.

Common Mistakes

1. Calling ่ “the low-tone sign”

❌ ค่ามีเสียงเอกเพราะใช้ไม้เอก

Incorrect — low-class ค plus ไม้เอก produces a falling tone.

✅ ค่ามีเสียงโทเพราะ ค เป็นอักษรต่ำ

kha mi siang tho phro kho pen akson tam

Correct — ค่า has a falling tone because ค is low class.

2. Ignoring the class contrast in ข่า and ค่า

❌ ข่ากับค่าออกเสียงวรรณยุกต์เหมือนกัน

Incorrect — identical RTGS and identical marks do not imply identical tones.

✅ ข่าเสียงเอกแต่ค่าเสียงโท

kha siang ek tae kha siang tho

Correct — ข่า has a low tone, but ค่า has a falling tone.

3. Reapplying the unmarked dead-syllable rule

❌ แซ่บต้องใช้กฎคำตายที่ไม่มีรูปวรรณยุกต์

Incorrect — the written ไม้เอก activates the marked table.

✅ แซ่บอ่านตามกฎอักษรต่ำที่มีไม้เอก

saep an tam kot akson tam thi mi mai ek

Correct — แซ่บ follows the low-class plus ไม้เอก rule.

4. Letting visual placement choose the class

❌ เปลี่ยนใช้ชั้นอักษรของ ล เพราะไม้เอกอยู่เหนือ ล

Incorrect — the true cluster is controlled by initial ป.

✅ เปลี่ยนใช้ ป อักษรกลางควบคุมเสียงวรรณยุกต์

plian chai po akson klang khuapkhum siang wannayuk

Correct — mid-class ป controls the tone of เปลี่ยน.

Key Takeaways

ไม้เอก has two regular Central Thai outcomes: low tone after a mid- or high-class onset, and falling tone after a low-class onset. Analyze the whole syllable, but do not reapply the unmarked live/dead rule after finding ่. Most importantly, never infer the tone from the mark's name, its visual position, or an RTGS spelling.
