ไม้ตรี ๊ and ไม้จัตวา ๋ complete the five-tone possibilities of a mid-class onset. In their regular standard use, ไม้ตรี gives high tone and ไม้จัตวา gives rising tone. They are far less widely distributed than ไม้เอก and ไม้โท, so learners should treat the spelling of each word as lexical rather than attaching these marks freely.
The two marks are most revealing when placed beside the full mid-class series ปา, ป่า, ป้า, ป๊า, ป๋า. Every form has the same initial consonant and long vowel; the five orthographic choices produce the five Central Thai tones. RTGS writes every one simply as pa.
The regular core: mid-class initials
| Mark with mid class | Tone | Examples | Distribution |
|---|---|---|---|
| ๊ ไม้ตรี | high | ป๊า, โต๊ะ, ก๊าซ | established words, many loans and expressive forms |
| ๋ ไม้จัตวา | rising | ป๋า, จ๋า, ตั๋ว | established words, vocatives, and loans |
Standard productive tone spelling uses these marks primarily with mid-class initials. High- and low-class initials already reach the needed tones through their own class patterns and ไม้เอก or ไม้โท. You may encounter unconventional combinations in (informal) advertising, chat, eye dialect, or attempts to spell foreign intonation, but they are not a new regular tone table.
ไม้ตรี ๊ produces high tone
The high tone occupies the upper part of the pitch range and often rises toward the end in modern Bangkok speech. It is not simply “say the word loudly.” Keep the vowel quality, length, and final consonant stable while pitch supplies the contrast.
ป๊า
pa
dad — high tone (isolated reading; informal family term)
ป๊าจะกลับถึงบ้านกี่โมงครับ
pa cha klap thueng ban ki mong khrap
Dad, what time will you get home? (informal family term; polite male speaker)
ป is mid class, and ๊ supplies high tone. ป๊า is an (informal) kin term associated especially with families using Chinese-derived address vocabulary; พ่อ is the neutral general word for “father.” This is a register and family-vocabulary difference, not a difference in the tone rule.
ไม้ตรี also occurs in checked syllables. โต๊ะ has a short vowel with glottal closure, while ก๊าซ has a long vowel followed by final /t/ because final ซ neutralizes to /t/. Both are dead, yet both have high tone.
โต๊ะ
to
table — high tone (isolated reading)
โต๊ะริมหน้าต่างยังว่างไหมคะ
to rim natang yang wang mai kha
Is the table by the window still available? (polite, female speaker)
กรุณาปิดวาล์วก๊าซก่อนออกจากครัวครับ
karuna pit wao kat kon ok chak khrua khrap
Please turn off the gas valve before leaving the kitchen. (formal/polite request, male speaker)
These words show why vowel length and live/dead status must be identified without automatically applying an unmarked rule. A present tone mark selects the marked pattern. The rime still controls the actual segmental pronunciation and limits which tone shapes occur naturally, but it does not erase ๊.
ไม้จัตวา ๋ produces rising tone
The Central Thai rising tone typically begins around the lower-middle range, dips or stays low briefly, and then rises. English question intonation is not a substitute: the Thai movement belongs inside the word and remains lexical even in statements.
จ๋า
cha
dear; yes? — rising tone (isolated vocative; warm/informal)
แม่จ๋า วันนี้กลับบ้านเร็วหน่อยนะ
mae cha wan ni klap ban reo noi na
Mom, please come home a little early today. (warm/informal)
เดี๋ยวฉันโทรกลับนะ
diao chan tho klap na
I'll call you back in a moment. (informal)
เก็บตั๋วไว้จนกว่าจะออกจากสถานีนะครับ
kep tua wai chon kwa cha ok chak sathani na khrap
Please keep your ticket until you leave the station. (polite, male speaker)
จ in จ๋า, ด in เดี๋ยว, and ต in ตั๋ว are mid class. Their rimes are live, which is compatible with a full rising contour. Rising tone is not normally found on a syllable cut short by final /p/, /t/, /k/, or glottal closure; this helps explain why familiar ไม้จัตวา words overwhelmingly provide enough voiced duration for the rise.
The five-way ป series
One mid-class initial can display the system more cleanly than five unrelated words:
| Thai | Spelling | Tone | Meaning and register |
|---|---|---|---|
| ปา | no mark | mid | throw |
| ป่า | ไม้เอก | low | forest |
| ป้า | ไม้โท | falling | aunt; older woman |
| ป๊า | ไม้ตรี | high | dad (informal family term) |
| ป๋า | ไม้จัตวา | rising | dad; boss/big shot (informal) |
ช่วยปาลูกบอลมาทางนี้หน่อย
chuai pa lukbon ma thang ni noi
Please throw the ball this way.
ป๋าครับ เย็นนี้กลับมากินข้าวด้วยกันนะ
pa khrap yen ni klap ma kin khao duai kan na
Dad, come home and have dinner with us tonight. (informal family address; male speaker)
The identical RTGS string pa cannot tell you which word is intended. It omits tone by design, and it also omits vowel length in general. Treat the romanization as a broad pronunciation aid while using Thai spelling and audio for the actual contrast.
Visual order and mark identity
Tone marks are written above the consonant area, sometimes above an upper vowel sign. They are read as part of the syllable, not as the first sound simply because they sit high on the line. In โต๊ะ, for example, the displayed sequence includes preposed โ before ต, but the spoken syllable begins /t/.
Do not confuse ไม้ตรี ๊ with ไม้ไต่คู้ ็. The latter is a vowel-shortening/orthographic sign, not a tone mark. ก็ “then; also; indeed” contains ็ and has falling tone through its exceptional established spelling; it is not an example of ไม้ตรี.
ถ้าฝนตกก็รอที่นี่ก่อนนะ
tha fon tok ko ro thi ni kon na
If it rains, wait here first. (informal)
This distinction is visually small and genuinely requires memorization. Naming the marks aloud while writing them is more reliable than remembering only their shapes.
Established spelling, not free tone notation
Thai does not let writers place ๊ or ๋ over any word merely to show a momentary pitch. A word has a conventional spelling. Expressive respellings such as nonstandard (informal) social-media forms can be recognizable, but they should not be presented as neutral orthography or copied into formal writing.
For new vocabulary, check a reliable dictionary. Loanwords are particularly unpredictable because conventional spellings balance source form, Thai phonotactics, and tone representation. There is no honest mechanical shortcut from an English spelling to the correct Thai mark.
Common Mistakes
1. Treating the mark number as the tone number
❌ ไม้ตรีต้องแทนวรรณยุกต์ลำดับที่สามในทุกชั้นอักษร
Incorrect — mark names belong to an orthographic system, not a universal numbered pitch code.
✅ ในคำมาตรฐานอย่างป๊า อักษรกลางกับไม้ตรีให้เสียงตรี
nai kham mattrathan yang pa akson klang kap mai tri hai siang tri
Correct — in a standard word such as ป๊า, mid class plus ไม้ตรี gives high tone.
2. Extending ๊ and ๋ freely to low-class initials
❌ ผู้เรียนเติมไม้ตรีหรือไม้จัตวาให้คำไหนก็ได้
Incorrect — these marks are not free phonetic notation.
✅ ควรจำรูปสะกดมาตรฐานและตรวจคำยืมในพจนานุกรม
khuan cham rup sakot mattrathan lae truat kham yuem nai photchananukrom
Correct — learn standard spellings and check loanwords in a dictionary.
3. Confusing ไม้ตรี with ไม้ไต่คู้
❌ ก็มีไม้ตรีจึงอ่านเหมือนโต๊ะ
Incorrect — ก็ contains ไม้ไต่คู้, not ไม้ตรี.
✅ โต๊ะมีไม้ตรี แต่ก็มีไม้ไต่คู้
to mi mai tri tae ko mi mai taikhu
Correct — โต๊ะ has ไม้ตรี, but ก็ has ไม้ไต่คู้.
4. Assuming identical RTGS means identical tone
❌ ปา ป่า ป้า ป๊า และป๋าออกเสียงเหมือนกันเพราะรูปถอดเสียงเหมือนกัน
Incorrect — identical RTGS forms do not preserve the five-way tonal contrast.
✅ รูปวรรณยุกต์ทำให้คำชุดนี้มีเสียงต่างกันห้าเสียง
rup wannayuk tham hai kham chut ni mi siang tang kan ha siang
Correct — the tone spellings give this set five different tones.
5. Replacing lexical rising tone with English question intonation
❌ ตั๋วเปลี่ยนเป็นเสียงอื่นเมื่ออยู่ในประโยคบอกเล่า
Incorrect — its lexical rising tone remains in a statement.
✅ คำว่าตั๋วยังคงเสียงจัตวาไม่ว่าจะอยู่ในประโยคชนิดใด
kham wa tua yang khong siang chattawa mai wa cha yu nai prayok chanit dai
Correct — ตั๋ว keeps its rising tone in every sentence type.
Key Takeaways
In standard core spellings, mid class plus ไม้ตรี gives high tone, and mid class plus ไม้จัตวา gives rising tone. The marks are lexically restricted, not freely added pitch notation. Keep ๊ distinct from the vowel sign ็, preserve the word's live/dead structure, and use Thai script—not RTGS—to recover the five-way contrast.
