นั่ง: sit; ride

Thai นั่ง is the invariant verb “sit,” and it also introduces travel as a passenger: นั่งรถเมล์ “take the bus,” นั่งรถไฟไปเชียงใหม่ “ride the train to Chiang Mai.” Before another activity, it presents a seated posture maintained during that activity: นั่งอ่านหนังสือ, นั่งคุย, นั่งรอ. These uses form a coherent family, but their argument frames must be learned rather than copied from English prepositions.

Posture, place, and sitting down

Bare นั่ง describes adopting or maintaining a seated posture. A place follows directly or with an appropriate location expression: นั่งตรงนี้, นั่งบนเก้าอี้, นั่งข้างหน้าต่าง. นั่งลง focuses on the transition into the posture, while นั่งอยู่ presents the posture as continuing.

เชิญนั่งที่เก้าอี้ข้างหน้าต่างได้เลยค่ะ

choen nang thi kaoi khang natang dai loei kha

Please feel free to sit in the chair beside the window. (ordinary polite invitation, female speaker)

คุณตานั่งอยู่หน้าบ้านตั้งแต่เช้าครับ

khun ta nang yu na ban tangtae chao khrap

Grandpa has been sitting in front of the house since morning. (ordinary polite report, male speaker)

พอหมอเข้ามา ทุกคนก็นั่งลงค่ะ

pho mo khao ma thuk khon ko nang long kha

When the doctor came in, everyone sat down. (ordinary polite report, female speaker)

English often uses be sitting for both posture and location. Thai does not conjugate นั่ง or add เป็น. The continuing posture can be explicit with อยู่, while the surrounding conversation can make it unnecessary.

💡
Choose between นั่ง, นั่งลง, and นั่งอยู่ by viewpoint: posture generally, transition into sitting, or a posture continuing through the reference time. ลง and อยู่ are not tense endings.

นั่ง + vehicle: travel as a passenger

Before a vehicle noun, นั่ง means ride or take that vehicle as a passenger. It does not claim that the passenger remains physically seated throughout the trip. นั่งรถ, นั่งรถเมล์, นั่งรถไฟ, นั่งแท็กซี่, and นั่งเครื่องบิน are ordinary collocations. A destination or direction follows the vehicle.

พรุ่งนี้ผมจะนั่งรถไฟไปพิษณุโลกครับ

phrung ni phom cha nang rot fai pai phitsanulok khrap

Tomorrow I'll take the train to Phitsanulok. (ordinary polite speech, male speaker)

จากโรงแรมคุณนั่งแท็กซี่มาที่นี่ได้ค่ะ

chak rongraem khun nang thaeksi ma thi ni dai kha

You can take a taxi here from the hotel. (ordinary polite directions, female speaker)

เรานั่งเครื่องบินประมาณสิบเอ็ดชั่วโมงครับ

rao nang khrueangbin praman sip et chua mong khrap

We were on the plane for about eleven hours. (ordinary polite travel report, male speaker)

This construction contrasts with ขับรถ “drive.” ผมนั่งรถไปทำงาน leaves the driver unspecified and presents the speaker as a passenger; ผมขับรถไปทำงาน makes the speaker the driver. ขึ้นรถ focuses on boarding, not the whole ride.

วันนี้ฉันไม่ขับรถค่ะ จะนั่งรถเมล์ไปทำงาน

wan ni chan mai khap rot kha cha nang rot me pai tham ngan

I'm not driving today; I'll take the bus to work. (ordinary polite speech, female speaker)

See motion with ไป for how the destination-oriented event follows the passenger frame.

Seated activity chains

In นั่ง + activity, นั่ง supplies posture and the following predicate supplies the main activity. The two typically share a participant and overlap in time: นั่งอ่าน, นั่งทำงาน, นั่งคุย, นั่งรอ. Thai does not mark the second predicate as an infinitive or gerund.

ลูกนั่งทำการบ้านที่โต๊ะกินข้าวค่ะ

luk nang tham kanban thi to kin khao kha

My child is sitting doing homework at the dining table. (ordinary polite speech, female speaker)

ผมนั่งรอคิวมาสี่สิบนาทีแล้วครับ

phom nang ro khio ma si sip nathi laeo khrap

I've been sitting and waiting in the queue for forty minutes. (ordinary polite speech, male speaker)

พวกเรานั่งคุยเรื่องแผนเดินทางจนร้านปิดค่ะ

phuak rao nang khui rueang phaen doen thang chon ran pit kha

We sat talking about the travel plan until the shop closed. (ordinary polite report, female speaker)

The posture can be pragmatically prominent or backgrounded. นั่งรอ often conveys waiting in place, and sometimes impatience, while รอ alone merely names the waiting. นั่งเล่น is an established combination meaning sit around, relax, or spend time casually; เล่น does not always mean literal play there.

ตอนเย็นคุณยายนั่งเล่นริมคลองกับเพื่อนบ้านครับ

ton yen khun yai nang len rim khlong kap phuean ban khrap

In the evening Grandma sits and relaxes by the canal with the neighbors. (ordinary polite report, male speaker)

💡
Posture-first chains describe simultaneous circumstances: นั่งอ่าน means reading while seated. Reversing the verbs changes or destroys the relation. Learn frequent combinations as constructions, not as an unrestricted rule that any two verbs can be joined.

Aspect, negation, and omission

Because sitting can be seen as a transition or a maintained state, its aspect depends on the construction. กำลังนั่งลง presents the movement into the chair in progress. นั่งอยู่ presents continuing posture. นั่งแล้ว commonly means someone has taken a seat or has now ridden, depending on context.

ตอนนี้ผู้โดยสารกำลังนั่งประจำที่ค่ะ

ton ni phu doisan kamlang nang pracham thi kha

The passengers are taking their assigned seats now. (formal-neutral announcement, female voice)

เก้าอี้เปียกครับ ตรงนี้นั่งไม่ได้

kaoi piak khrap trong ni nang mai dai

The chair is wet; you can't sit here. (ordinary polite warning, male speaker)

ไม่ได้นั่ง denies that sitting or riding occurred; นั่งไม่ได้ means it is impossible or not permitted. When a vehicle is active in discourse, it can be omitted in a short answer: ขากลับนั่งรถไฟไหม — นั่งครับ.

Ordinary-polite dialogue

ขากลับคุณจะนั่งรถไฟหรือรถตู้คะ

kha klap khun cha nang rot fai rue rot tu kha

On the way back, will you take the train or a van? (ordinary polite question, female speaker)

ผมจะนั่งรถไฟครับ สบายกว่า

I'll take the train; it's more comfortable. (ordinary polite reply, male speaker)

ถ้าอย่างนั้นนั่งข้างหน้าต่างไหมคะ

tha yang nan nang khang natang mai kha

In that case, would you like to sit by the window? (ordinary polite question, female speaker)

ได้ครับ แต่ขอที่นั่งใกล้ประตูหน่อย

dai khrap tae kho thi nang klai pratu noi

Yes, but I'd like a seat near the door. (ordinary polite reply, male speaker)

Common Mistakes

1. Using เอา to translate English “take a bus”

❌ พรุ่งนี้ผมจะเอารถเมล์ไปมหาวิทยาลัยครับ

Incorrect for traveling as a passenger; เอารถเมล์ means take possession/control of the bus.

✅ พรุ่งนี้ผมจะนั่งรถเมล์ไปมหาวิทยาลัยครับ

phrung ni phom cha nang rot me pai mahawitthayalai khrap

Tomorrow I'll take the bus to the university. (ordinary polite speech, male speaker)

2. Adding ด้วย before the transport mode

❌ เมื่อเดือนที่แล้วฉันนั่งด้วยรถไฟไปอยุธยาค่ะ

Incorrect English-style instrumental framing; นั่ง takes the vehicle directly.

✅ เมื่อเดือนที่แล้วฉันนั่งรถไฟไปอยุธยาค่ะ

muea duean thi laeo chan nang rot fai pai ayutthaya kha

Last month I took the train to Ayutthaya. (ordinary polite speech, female speaker)

3. Reversing posture and simultaneous activity

❌ เขาอ่านนั่งรายงานอยู่ครับ

Incorrect order for ‘sit reading’; the posture predicate comes before the activity.

✅ เขานั่งอ่านรายงานอยู่มุมห้องครับ

khao nang an raingan yu mum hong khrap

He is sitting in the corner reading a report. (ordinary polite report, male speaker)

4. Confusing event denial with impossibility

❌ เมื่อวานฉันนั่งรถไฟไม่ได้ค่ะ

Wrong for the intended simple report ‘I did not take the train’; this says doing so was impossible.

✅ เมื่อวานฉันไม่ได้นั่งรถไฟค่ะ

muea wan chan mai dai nang rot fai kha

I didn't take the train yesterday. (ordinary polite speech, female speaker)

Key Takeaways

  • นั่ง + place presents seated posture; นั่งลง presents entering it; นั่งอยู่ presents it as continuing.
  • นั่ง + vehicle means travel as a passenger and contrasts with driving and boarding.
  • นั่ง + activity builds a simultaneous posture chain such as นั่งอ่าน or นั่งรอ.
  • นั่ง never conjugates. Time, aspect, negation, direction, and recoverable omission supply the wider interpretation.
