วิ่ง: run

Thai วิ่ง is the invariant verb “run.” Its central sense is rapid motion on foot, but it also describes a vehicle following a route or remaining in service and, in limited (informal/technical) contexts, a machine or system running. Directionals and route expressions build meaning around the unchanged verb: วิ่งไป, วิ่งกลับ, วิ่งรอบสวน, and วิ่งจากบ้านถึงสถานี.

A runner, a path, and an endpoint

วิ่ง is normally intransitive in its physical-motion sense. A following phrase identifies a path, direction, distance, endpoint, or purpose rather than a patient acted upon.

ผมวิ่งรอบสวนสามรอบก่อนทำงานครับ

phom wing rop suan sam rop kon tham ngan khrap

I run three laps around the park before work. (ordinary polite speech, male speaker)

เด็กวิ่งข้ามสนามไปหาแม่ค่ะ

dek wing kham sanam pai ha mae kha

The child ran across the field to their mother. (ordinary polite report, female speaker)

วันนี้ฉันวิ่งได้ห้ากิโลเมตรโดยไม่หยุดค่ะ

wan ni chan wing dai ha kilomet doi mai yut kha

Today I managed to run five kilometers without stopping. (ordinary polite speech, female speaker)

The distance follows วิ่ง directly as a measure expression; it is not a direct object like English run a company. Thai uses other verbs for managing an organization, such as บริหาร (formal-neutral) or ดูแล “look after/manage.”

💡
With physical วิ่ง, treat route, distance, endpoint, and purpose as distinct slots. วิ่งห้ากิโลเมตร measures the run; วิ่งถึงสถานี gives its endpoint; วิ่งไปซื้อยา adds the errand performed after the motion.

Direction and quick errands

ไป presents motion away from the current viewpoint or onward, มา toward it, and กลับ return. These directionals follow วิ่ง. A further action can follow the direction: วิ่งไปซื้อกาแฟ, วิ่งกลับมาเอากุญแจ. The verbs form an ordered event chain; ซื้อ and เอา are not English infinitives.

ได้ยินเสียงเรียกแล้วเขาวิ่งกลับมาทันทีครับ

dai yin siang riak laeo khao wing klap ma thanthi khrap

He heard someone call and ran straight back. (ordinary polite report, male speaker)

ฉันจะวิ่งไปเอาเอกสารที่รถให้ค่ะ

chan cha wing pai ao ekkasan thi rot hai kha

I'll quickly run to the car and get the documents for you. (ordinary polite offer, female speaker)

English “run errands” does not map neutrally to bare วิ่งธุระ; the ordinary expression is ไปทำธุระ. When literal haste matters, วิ่งไปทำธุระ is a motion-plus-purpose chain. In workplace talk, วิ่งเรื่อง... can mean actively chase a matter through the necessary offices or contacts (informal workplace), as in วิ่งเรื่องขออนุมัติเอกสาร. This is an established register-sensitive pattern, not a productive rule allowing วิ่ง before any noun.

ช่วงพักเที่ยงผมต้องวิ่งไปทำธุระที่ธนาคารครับ

chuang phak thiang phom tong wing pai tham thura thi thanakhan khrap

During lunch break I have to hurry over to the bank on an errand. (ordinary informal workplace speech, male speaker)

ฝ่ายธุรการกำลังวิ่งเรื่องขออนุมัติเอกสารอยู่ค่ะ

fai thurakan kamlang wing rueang kho anumat ekkasan yu kha

Administration is chasing the document approval through the process. (informal workplace report, female speaker)

The second usage is register-sensitive. In a formal report, write ดำเนินการขออนุมัติเอกสาร rather than วิ่งเอกสาร.

Vehicles, routes, and machines

A vehicle can be the subject of วิ่ง. The verb then means travel, operate, or provide service: รถไฟวิ่งตามปกติ, รถสายนี้วิ่งถึงตลาด. With mileage, it describes distance accumulated in service.

รถเมล์สายนี้วิ่งถึงสถานีรถไฟฟ้าครับ

rot me sai ni wing thueng sathani rot fai fa khrap

This bus route runs as far as the rapid-transit station. (ordinary polite informational speech, male speaker)

วันนี้รถไฟวิ่งตามปกติทุกสายค่ะ

wan ni rot fai wing tam pakati thuk sai kha

Today trains are running normally on every line. (neutral public-information register, female voice)

รถคันนี้วิ่งมาแล้วเกือบสองแสนกิโลเมตรครับ

rot khan ni wing ma laeo kueap song saen kilomet khrap

This car has already traveled almost two hundred thousand kilometers. (ordinary polite speech, male speaker)

In (informal technical speech), เครื่องยังวิ่งอยู่ can mean a machine is still running. More precise neutral choices depend on the device: เครื่องยังทำงานอยู่ “the machine is still operating,” มอเตอร์ยังหมุนอยู่ “the motor is still turning.” Do not extend English run indiscriminately to software, meetings, or businesses.

เครื่องเก่ายังวิ่งอยู่ครับ แต่เสียงดังผิดปกติ

khrueang kao yang wing yu khrap tae siang dang phit pakati

The old machine is still running, but it is unusually loud. (informal technical speech, male speaker)

Aspect, negation, and recoverable omission

Physical running is an activity, so กำลังวิ่ง...อยู่ presents it in progress. วิ่งแล้ว may say someone has run or that a service is now operating; the surrounding noun and context decide. ไม่ได้วิ่ง denies that a run occurred, whereas วิ่งไม่ได้ presents running as impossible.

หมอบอกให้พัก วันนี้ผมวิ่งไม่ได้ครับ

mo bok hai phak wan ni phom wing mai dai khrap

The doctor told me to rest, so I can't run today. (ordinary polite speech, male speaker)

เมื่อเช้าฉันไม่ได้วิ่งเพราะฝนตกหนักค่ะ

muea chao chan mai dai wing phro fon tok nak kha

I didn't run this morning because it rained heavily. (ordinary polite speech, female speaker)

After a shared plan, the route can be omitted: เย็นนี้วิ่งไหม — วิ่งครับ. The omitted path is recoverable; วิ่ง has not changed form or acquired an English tense.

The result-predicate guide explains postverbal ถึง, กลับ, and other complements without treating them as English prepositions.

💡
Keep ไม่ได้วิ่ง and วิ่งไม่ได้ apart. The first denies the running event; the second says running is not possible. English “couldn't run” can hide this difference.

Ordinary-polite dialogue

Will you run at the park this evening? (ordinary polite question, female speaker)

วิ่งครับ แต่วันนี้จะวิ่งแค่สามรอบ

ดีครับ ผมจะโทรถามเวลาเปิดก่อน

di khrap phom cha tho tham wela poet kon

Good idea. I'll call and ask the opening time first. (ordinary polite reply, male speaker)

Common Mistakes

1. Treating a route phrase as an English-style direct object

❌ ผมวิ่งสวนทุกเช้าครับ

Incorrect for the intended meaning ‘run in the park’; the setting needs a locative or path relation.

✅ ผมวิ่งในสวนใกล้บ้านทุกเช้าครับ

phom wing nai suan klai ban thuk chao khrap

I run in the park near my home every morning. (ordinary polite speech, male speaker)

2. Reversing motion and return direction

❌ ได้ยินเสียงแม่แล้วเด็กกลับวิ่งมาค่ะ

Incorrect neutral order—the running event precedes its return and viewpoint direction.

✅ ได้ยินเสียงแม่แล้วเด็กวิ่งกลับมาค่ะ

dai yin siang mae laeo dek wing klap ma kha

The child heard their mother and ran back. (ordinary polite report, female speaker)

3. Using วิ่ง for managing an organization

❌ พี่สาวฉันวิ่งบริษัทส่งออกค่ะ

Incorrect transfer from English ‘run a company’; วิ่ง does not neutrally mean manage here.

✅ พี่สาวฉันบริหารบริษัทส่งออกค่ะ

phi sao chan borihan borisat song ok kha

My older sister manages an export company. (formal-neutral speech, female speaker)

4. Confusing event denial with inability

❌ เมื่อเช้าฝนตก แต่ฉันวิ่งไม่ได้ค่ะ

Wrong for the intended simple report ‘I did not run’; this says running was impossible.

✅ เมื่อเช้าฝนตก ฉันเลยไม่ได้วิ่งค่ะ

muea chao fon tok chan loei mai dai wing kha

It rained this morning, so I didn't run. (ordinary polite speech, female speaker)

Key Takeaways

  • Physical วิ่ง combines with path, distance, direction, endpoint, and purpose expressions.
  • วิ่งไปทำธุระ is literal motion plus purpose, while informal วิ่งเรื่อง... means actively chase a matter through a process; vehicle subjects extend วิ่ง to routes and service.
  • Machine วิ่ง is informal technical usage, not a blanket equivalent of every English “run.”
  • The verb stays unchanged; aspect, time adverbs, directionals, negation, and discourse build the clause around it.
