This original connected text follows a male passenger at a bus-and-rail interchange. He hears two public announcements and asks a female staff member how to continue his journey. The announcements use impersonal, information-dense wording; the face-to-face turns use omitted subjects, question particles, and polite ครับ/ค่ะ/คะ. Putting both genres in one scene makes the register shift visible.
The numbers and route details are fictional. The text is not a current timetable. Its purpose is to show how Thai packages vehicles, routes, platforms, time, aspect, modality, and public instructions.

Natural full translation
An announcement says that bus 12 is about to depart platform 3 and asks passengers to check their belongings. A passenger asks whether that bus goes to the central station. The staff member says yes, but because it stops everywhere, the train is faster if he is in a hurry. He asks whether he needs another ticket; she says his existing card will work. A second announcement reports that train 84 will be about fifteen minutes late because of an operational problem. The passenger therefore asks about the next commuter train. It leaves at 9:20 from platform 2, but boarding has not begun. The final announcement asks ticket holders to stay behind the yellow line until staff invite them aboard. The passenger thanks the staff member and goes to wait.
English repeatedly supplies it, you, and they. Thai leaves these arguments unspoken when vehicle, passenger, or staff role is active.

Vehicle and route noun phrases
The public text uses institutional labels: รถโดยสารสาย 12 (rot doisan sai sip song) identifies a bus by route; รถไฟขบวนที่ 84 (rotfai khabuan thi paet sip si) identifies a train by its numbered service. In conversation, รถคันนี้ (rot khan ni) uses classifier คัน between the vehicle noun and demonstrative. The passenger points to a physically salient bus rather than repeating its route title.
บัตรใบเดิม (bat bai doem) uses ใบ, a classifier common with flat items and cards, plus เดิม “same/original.” English articles do not choose these forms; Thai construction and noun type do. See vehicle classifiers.
Numbers also have different functions. ชานชาลา 3 is a label, เก้าโมงยี่สิบ is clock time, and สิบห้านาที is a duration. None requires the same classifier pattern as รถคันนี้.
Aspect and modality locate the journey
กำลังจะออก (kamlang cha ok) places the bus immediately before departure. The train delay uses broad prospective จะล่าช้า (cha lacha), while the passenger's จะไปรอ (cha pai ro) states his plan. These are not three English-style future conjugations of the verbs.
ยังขึ้นรถไม่ได้ (yang khuen rot mai dai) puts postpredicate ไม่ได้ after the boarding event: boarding is still unavailable. It does not say that the passenger “did not board.” ใช้...ได้เลย (chai...dai loei) instead grants immediate practical possibility with the existing card.
The กำลังจะ guide separates imminence from an event already in progress.
Questions and zero arguments in service talk
The passenger asks ไปสถานีกลางไหมครับ (pai sathani klang mai khrap). ไหม remains after the predicate; Thai does not invert a subject and auxiliary. The staff member answers simply ไปค่ะ (pai kha), omitting “this bus” because the question established it.
Her ไม่ต้องค่ะ (mai tong kha) likewise omits “buy a new ticket.” The omitted event is recoverable from the immediately preceding question. In line 8, the train remains the subject of ออกเก้าโมงยี่สิบ, while an impersonal interpretation supplies passengers for ขึ้นรถไม่ได้. Repeating every English pronoun would make the exchange heavier, not clearer.
Announcement register versus face-to-face register
Announcements open with เรียนผู้โดยสารทุกท่าน (rian phu doisan thuk than) or โปรดทราบ (prot sap), then use กรุณา (karuna) plus an action. They avoid a personal “I” and select nouns such as สัมภาระ, เนื่องจาก, and เหตุขัดข้องด้านการเดินรถ. This is formal public packaging.
The staff dialogue uses shorter vocabulary, ค่ะ/คะ, and soft นะคะ. Her ถ้ารีบ นั่งรถไฟจะเร็วกว่า offers advice rather than issuing the announcement's institutional instruction. Thai has not switched to another grammar; pronouns, lexicon, particles, and information density have shifted with the genre.
Clause linkage creates the rerouting decision
แต่ contrasts the correct bus route with its slow stopping pattern. ถ้า... makes hurry the condition for the train recommendation. เนื่องจาก formally links delay to its cause. จนกว่า...จะ... keeps passengers behind the line up to the future staff call. The opening แล้ว in the passenger's next question means “then/given that,” connecting the delay announcement to his search for an alternative.
Reconstructing the social effect
- A formal announcement selects all passengers as an institutional audience.
- The passenger narrows the scene with classifier phrase รถคันนี้ and a polite ไหม question.
- Short zero-argument answers show that staff and passenger share the route topic.
- A second announcement changes the plan through formal causal linkage.
- Aspect and modality distinguish imminent departure, delayed prospect, unavailable boarding, and permitted card use.
- Public กรุณา and conversational ค่ะ/คะ perform different kinds of politeness.
The full passage reveals how one traveler moves between two registers while keeping a single reference chain.
Common Mistakes
1. Treating a platform number as a counted noun phrase
ชานชาลา 2 (chan chala song) is a label, like “platform 2.” Do not automatically insert a classifier simply because English contains a number.
✅ สถานีนี้มีชานชาลาที่เปิดใช้งานอยู่สองชานชาลาค่ะ
sathani ni mi chan chala thi poet chai ngan yu song chan chala kha
This station has two platforms currently in use. (female staff member; สองชานชาลา is a genuine count)
✅ รถไฟขบวนนี้ออกจากชานชาลา 2 ค่ะ
rotfai khabuan ni ok chak chan chala song kha
This train departs from platform 2. (female staff member; 2 is a platform label)
2. Copying English question inversion
❌ ไหมรถคันนี้ไปสถานีกลางครับ
Incorrect yes-no question order; ไหม follows the Thai proposition.
✅ รถไฟขบวนนี้จอดที่สถานีกลางไหมครับ
rotfai khabuan ni chot thi sathani klang mai khrap
Does this train stop at the central station? (male passenger; question particle after the proposition)
3. Reading ไม่ได้ as simple past
❌ ตอนนี้ไม่ได้ผู้โดยสารขึ้นรถค่ะ
Incorrect English-like auxiliary order—ไม่ได้ cannot be placed before the passenger subject to mean that boarding is unavailable.
✅ ตอนนี้ผ่านประตูนี้ไม่ได้ค่ะ เครื่องอ่านบัตรเสีย
ton ni phan pratu ni mai dai kha khrueang an bat sia
You can't pass through this gate now; the card reader is broken. (female staff member; postpredicate inability)
Position and the obstacle create an unavailable-event reading, not “did not pass.”
4. Flattening a public instruction into casual speech
❌ โปรดครับเก็บตั๋วไว้จนกว่าจะออกจากสถานีค่ะ
Incorrect particle placement and mixed packaging—ครับ/ค่ะ do not interrupt the formal โปรด instruction.
✅ กรุณาเก็บตั๋วไว้จนกว่าจะออกจากสถานี
karuna kep tua wai chon kwa cha ok chak sathani
Please retain your ticket until you leave the station. (formal public instruction; impersonal audience)
The missing ครับ/ค่ะ does not make this rude. กรุณา and the announcement frame carry institutional politeness.
Key Takeaways
- Route numbers, platform labels, time, duration, and classifier phrases package numbers differently.
- กำลังจะ, จะ, ได้, and ยัง...ไม่ได้ locate imminent, prospective, possible, and unavailable stages.
- Service answers omit vehicles and actions already active in the question.
- Announcements use impersonal formal vocabulary; face-to-face service turns use particles and shorter responsive syntax.
- Clause linkers turn route, delay, and boarding information into one coherent travel decision.
