Public signs are not incomplete conversation. They are a compact written genre in which location supplies the topic, the reader supplies the addressee, and layout supplies many boundaries that speech would mark with pauses or particles. This page follows an original set of notices through a fictional community library, from its entrance and reading room to a temporary closure and emergency exit.
The notices use standard Central Thai. They are original composites rather than quotations from one real institution, but their directive frames, counts, and administrative vocabulary reflect ordinary public signage. Read them as one information system: each item answers a question created by the visitor's movement through the building.

Natural full translation
The library is open every day from nine until six. Visitors should leave large bags at the counter, may not take food or drinks into the reading room, and are asked to silence phones before using the facility. Reference books must remain inside. The meeting room on floor two is temporarily closed for renovation through 15 September. The lift has a maximum load of eight people at a time. A wet-floor warning asks visitors to walk carefully. Anyone who finds lost property should contact the information officer, and nothing may obstruct the emergency exit.
English inserts visitors, you, anyone, is, and may. The Thai signs usually do not. The physical setting identifies the relevant object and audience, while directive verbs and layout identify what kind of action is required.
Line-by-line segmentation and gloss
The displayed signs use natural Thai spacing. Slashes in this table show the clauses and phrases that a learner must recover.

Why signs can be so short
Location supplies the missing subject and addressee
On a sign beside a lift, ลิฟต์โดยสารได้... needs no phrase meaning “passengers are permitted to use this lift.” On an emergency door, ห้ามวางสิ่งของกีดขวาง needs neither “you” nor “here.” The object being looked at supplies the topic; the reader in that space is the understood addressee.
This is a strong genre-specific use of zero arguments. In conversation, the same bare ห้ามวาง could sound abrupt because the interpersonal situation matters. On a safety sign, institutional authority and physical placement make its force conventional.
โปรด, กรุณา, and ห้าม do different work
โปรด introduces an impersonal public request: leave bags, walk carefully. กรุณา likewise packages a formal courteous instruction and is common in public-facing written language. Neither is a casual substitute for sentence-final นะ between friends.
ห้าม marks a prohibition, not a polite preference. The food sign bans entry with food and drink; the exit sign bans obstructing objects. English may translate both with “no...” or “do not...,” but Thai makes the directive force explicit at the beginning. Compare the fuller system of prohibitives.
Noun phrases become headings
หนังสืออ้างอิง and ทางออกฉุกเฉิน are visually separated topics. What follows is the relevant restriction. English often adds a colon or a full clause: “Reference books: for use inside only”; “Emergency exit: do not obstruct.” Thai signage can let line breaks, size, or spacing perform the boundary work.
The compounds are head-first: ห้องอ่านหนังสือ is a room for reading books, หนังสืออ้างอิง is reference-use material, and ทางออกฉุกเฉิน is an emergency exit. Do not infer word boundaries from every printed space. A sign designer may add space for visual balance even when the grammar remains one phrase.
Counts are built for the restriction being measured
กระเป๋าใบใหญ่ uses ใบ in a classifier-plus-modifier phrase that identifies large bags. The lift sign uses ครั้งละ “per occasion/load” plus ไม่เกิน 8 คน “not exceeding eight people.” คน counts the passengers, while ครั้งละ distributes the limit over each lift trip.
English puts the numeral directly before people. Thai still needs the classifier-like human noun คน after the numeral. The construction is compact because “the lift may carry” and the institutional agent are supplied by genre.
Time and aspect delimit validity
เปิดทุกวัน states the regular schedule without a copula. ปิดปรับปรุงถึงวันที่ 15 กันยายน describes a temporary closure whose endpoint is explicit. Thai does not mark is closed with an English-style passive or present tense; the predicate plus posted context gives the current status.
The sign uses ถึง to include the stated endpoint in the closure span. If the reopening day matters operationally, a responsible notice should state it separately rather than force readers to infer whether service resumes on or after that date.
Conditions connect hazard to response
พื้นเปียก โปรดเดินด้วยความระมัดระวัง places the hazard before the action it motivates. หากพบ... กรุณาติดต่อ... uses formal หาก to make finding lost property the condition for contacting staff. The first relation is inferred; the second is overt. This contrast shows how signs balance brevity against the cost of misunderstanding.
Reconstructing the public voice
The notice system becomes more forceful as risk rises. Opening hours merely state a fact. Bag storage and phone silence are courteous operational requests. Food entry and exit obstruction receive categorical ห้าม. The wet-floor notice names the immediate hazard before the requested behavior. This scale of force is part of the genre's social meaning.
At the same time, the institution rarely says “we” or calls the reader “you.” That depersonalization makes the rules apply generally. It is formal-neutral public language, not the conversational style of a clerk speaking to one visitor and not the dense legal style of a regulation. A whole set of signs reveals this calibrated voice better than an isolated translation of กรุณา as “please.”
Common Mistakes
1. Combining directive heads in the wrong order
❌ ห้ามกรุณานำอาหารเข้า
Incorrect directive structure—categorical ห้าม and courteous กรุณา do not stack this way before one action.
✅ กรุณารับประทานอาหารในพื้นที่ที่จัดไว้
karuna rapprathan ahan nai phuenthi thi chat wai
Please eat in the designated area. (formal public instruction offering the permitted alternative)
2. Putting the numeral after the people classifier
❌ ห้องนี้เข้าได้ไม่เกินคน 20
Incorrect numeral-classifier order—the numeral precedes คน.
✅ ห้องนี้เข้าได้ไม่เกิน 20 คน
hong ni khao dai mai koen yi sip khon
No more than twenty people may enter this room. (capacity notice)
3. Separating the renovation predicate
❌ ห้องน้ำปิดถึงปรับปรุงวันศุกร์
Incorrect ordering—ปิดปรับปรุง forms the closure predicate, and the endpoint follows it.
✅ ห้องน้ำปิดปรับปรุงถึงวันศุกร์
hong nam pit prapprung thueng wan suk
The restroom is closed for renovation through Friday. (temporary public notice)
4. Treating each analytical chunk as a written word
❌ โปรด ปิด เสียง โทรศัพท์ ก่อน เข้า ใช้ บริการ
Incorrect Thai orthography—analysis boundaries have been turned into English-style word spaces.
✅ โปรดปิดเสียงอุปกรณ์สื่อสารก่อนเข้าห้องบรรยาย
prot pit siang uppakon suesan kon khao hong banyai
Please silence communication devices before entering the lecture room. (formal public request; natural spacing)
