Thai forms a property superlative with property + ที่สุด: ใหญ่ที่สุด “largest,” เร็วที่สุด “fastest,” ดีที่สุด “best.” The property does not change form, and Thai does not insert a copula before it. A phrase naming the comparison set can follow: ใหญ่ที่สุดในกลุ่ม “largest in the group.”
English superlatives normally require the. Thai has no corresponding obligatory article. The superlative meaning comes from ที่สุด plus a relevant set supplied by the sentence or the conversation.
The basic property + ที่สุด pattern
| Topic | Property | Superlative | Comparison set |
|---|---|---|---|
| ห้องนี้ | ใหญ่ | ที่สุด | ในโรงแรม |
| รุ่นนี้ | เบา | ที่สุด | ในสามรุ่น |
| ทางนี้ | เร็ว | ที่สุด | สำหรับไปสถานี |
| ร้านนี้ | ดี | ที่สุด | ตามบริบท |
ห้องมุมนี้ใหญ่ที่สุดในโรงแรมค่ะ
hong mum ni yai thi sut nai rongraem kha
This corner room is the largest in the hotel. (ordinary polite speech, female speaker)
รุ่นนี้เบาที่สุดในสามรุ่นครับ
run ni bao thi sut nai sam run khrap
This model is the lightest of the three. (ordinary polite speech, male speaker)
ทางเลียบคลองเร็วที่สุดสำหรับไปสถานีค่ะ
thang liap khlong reo thi sut samrap pai sathani kha
The route along the canal is the fastest way to the station. (ordinary polite speech, female speaker)
The property words ใหญ่, เบา, and เร็ว are unchanged. ที่สุด adds an extreme-degree relation, while ในโรงแรม, ในสามรุ่น, and the purpose phrase establish the domain in which the claim is evaluated.
Stating the comparison set
ใน + group/place is the common neutral way to name a set: อร่อยที่สุดในย่านนี้ “most delicious in this neighborhood.” ในบรรดา + plural set explicitly means “among” and is useful in careful or (formal) comparisons. A phrase with จาก can select from presented options, but do not treat these markers as interchangeable English articles.
ร้านตรงหัวมุมอร่อยที่สุดในย่านนี้ครับ
ran trong hua mum aroi thi sut nai yan ni khrap
The restaurant on the corner has the best food in this neighborhood. (ordinary polite speech, male speaker)
ในบรรดาผู้สมัครทั้งหมด คุณมาลีมีประสบการณ์มากที่สุดค่ะ
nai banda phu samak thangmot khun mali mi prasopkan mak thi sut kha
Among all the applicants, Mali has the most experience. (formal-polite assessment, female speaker)
จากสามตัวเลือกนี้ ตัวเลือกที่สองปลอดภัยที่สุดครับ
chak sam tua lueak ni tua lueak thi song plotphai thi sut khrap
Of these three options, the second is the safest. (formal-polite evaluation, male speaker)
The applicant example uses มากที่สุด because the scale is quantity of experience. The restaurant and option examples use lexical properties directly. A precise set protects a superlative from sounding like an unrestricted claim about the entire world.
Superlatives inside noun phrases
To select “the X-est noun,” use noun + classifier + ที่ + property + ที่สุด or the simpler noun + ที่ + property + ที่สุด when no classifier is needed. The first ที่ introduces the modifying predicate; the ที่ inside ที่สุด marks superlative degree.
| Frame | Thai | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| N + ที่ + property + ที่สุด | ทางที่สั้นที่สุด | the shortest route |
| N + CL + ที่ + property + ที่สุด | หนังสือเล่มที่บางที่สุด | the thinnest book |
| CL + ที่ + property + ที่สุด | อันที่ถูกที่สุด | the cheapest one |
ผมเลือกเส้นทางที่สั้นที่สุดครับ
phom lueak senthang thi san thi sut khrap
I chose the shortest route. (ordinary polite speech, male speaker)
ช่วยหยิบหนังสือเล่มที่บางที่สุดให้หน่อยค่ะ
chuai yip nangsue lem thi bang thi sut hai noi kha
Please pass me the thinnest book. (ordinary polite request, female speaker)
เอาอันที่ถูกที่สุดครับ
ao an thi thuk thi sut khrap
I'll take the cheapest one. (ordinary polite speech, male customer; head noun omitted)
English uses the and often changes the adjective. Thai uses classifier structure and a modifying predicate. The two written instances of ที่ in เล่มที่บางที่สุด do different jobs; neither is an article.
Best, worst, and “one of the best”
ดีที่สุด is compositionally ดี + ที่สุด even though English uses the irregular word best. The opposite is แย่ที่สุด or, in suitable contexts, เลวที่สุด; ไม่ดีที่สุด only denies top rank and does not mean “worst.”
วิธีนี้ดีที่สุดสำหรับผู้เริ่มต้นค่ะ
withi ni di thi sut samrap phu roemton kha
This method is best for beginners. (neutral instructional register, female speaker)
วันนี้เป็นวันที่แย่ที่สุดของสัปดาห์ครับ
wan ni pen wan thi yae thi sut khong sapda khrap
Today is the worst day of the week. (ordinary polite speech, male speaker)
To say “one of the best,” Thai can use เป็นหนึ่งใน + plural domain + ที่ + property + ที่สุด. Here เป็น is legitimate because the predicate is the noun phrase หนึ่งใน... “one among...,” not because เป็น introduces ดี.
ที่นี่เป็นหนึ่งในโรงพยาบาลที่ดีที่สุดของจังหวัดค่ะ
thi ni pen nueng nai rongphayaban thi di thi sut khong changwat kha
This is one of the best hospitals in the province. (formal-polite assessment, female speaker)
This construction does not assert a unique winner. It places one member inside a top-ranked subset.
Negation and changing evaluations
ไม่ precedes the whole superlative property phrase: ไม่แพงที่สุด “not the most expensive.” Aspectual and temporal words can update which member holds the extreme position without changing the property itself.
รุ่นนี้ไม่แพงที่สุด แต่คุ้มที่สุดครับ
run ni mai phaeng thi sut tae khum thi sut khrap
This model is not the most expensive, but it offers the best value. (ordinary polite speech, male speaker)
หลังลดราคา รุ่นนี้ถูกที่สุดแล้วค่ะ
lang lot rakha run ni thuk thi sut laeo kha
After the price reduction, this model is now the cheapest. (polite commercial explanation, female speaker)
แล้ว presents a newly relevant state: this model has reached cheapest status now. It is not a past-tense ending, and ถูก remains unchanged.
ที่สุด versus informal สุด
The full property + ที่สุด pattern is neutral across speech and writing. Informal speech, advertising, and expressive online language also use สุด in shorter intensifying patterns. Those patterns do not always make a logically unique superlative; they can simply mean “extremely.” Keep the neutral superlative ที่สุด separate from register-sensitive intensification, which is covered on the intensifier page.
Ordinary-polite dialogue
สามร้านนี้ร้านไหนใกล้ที่สุดคะ
sam ran ni ran nai klai thi sut kha
Which of these three shops is the closest? (polite question, female speaker)
ร้านข้างธนาคารใกล้ที่สุดครับ แต่ร้านตรงตลาดถูกที่สุด
ran khang thanakhan klai thi sut khrap tae ran trong talat thuk thi sut
The shop beside the bank is the closest, but the one at the market is the cheapest. (polite reply, male speaker)
The reply omits repeated material after each property because the three-shop set remains active. Different properties can select different winners within the same set.
Common Mistakes
1. Putting ที่สุด before the property
❌ ห้องนี้ที่สุดใหญ่ค่ะ
Incorrect English-like order—ที่สุด follows the property.
✅ ห้องชั้นบนใหญ่ที่สุดค่ะ
hong chan bon yai thi sut kha
The upstairs room is the largest. (ordinary polite speech, female speaker; comparison set understood)
2. Inserting เป็น before a property superlative
❌ รุ่นนี้เป็นเบาที่สุดครับ
Incorrect—เบาที่สุด is already the predicate.
✅ รุ่นสำหรับเดินทางเบาที่สุดครับ
run samrap doen thang bao thi sut khrap
The travel model is the lightest. (ordinary polite speech, male speaker)
3. Copying English article placement
❌ ฉันเลือกที่สุดถูกอันค่ะ
Incorrect—Thai selects the item first and places its superlative description afterward.
✅ ฉันเลือกอันที่ถูกที่สุดค่ะ
chan lueak an thi thuk thi sut kha
I chose the cheapest one. (ordinary polite speech, female speaker)
4. Using กว่า and ที่สุด as if both were required
❌ ร้านนี้อร่อยกว่าทุกร้านที่สุดครับ
Incorrect mixed comparison—use a superlative plus its set.
✅ ร้านริมแม่น้ำอร่อยที่สุดในย่านนี้ครับ
ran rim maenam aroi thi sut nai yan ni khrap
The riverside restaurant has the best food in this neighborhood. (ordinary polite speech, male speaker)
5. Treating “not the best” as “the worst”
❌ ไม่ดีที่สุดแปลว่าแย่ที่สุดเสมอ
Incorrect—not holding first place does not imply holding last place.
✅ แผนนี้ไม่ดีที่สุด แต่ก็ไม่ได้แย่ที่สุดค่ะ
phaen ni mai di thi sut tae ko mai dai yae thi sut kha
This plan is not the best, but it is not the worst either. (ordinary polite speech, female speaker)
Key Takeaways
Put ที่สุด after an unchanged property. State the comparison set with ใน or ในบรรดา when it is not obvious. Inside a noun phrase, use noun/classifier + ที่ + property + ที่สุด. Negating a superlative only removes top rank, and เป็น appears only when a separate noun predicate—such as หนึ่งใน...—requires it.
