Thai has no single list of interchangeable words for English very. มาก is the broad neutral choice, while โคตร, แสน, and สุด differ sharply in position, social meaning, and the kinds of phrase they favor. An intensifier modifies a property predicate directly—there is still no copula—but choosing the wrong one can make a polite sentence sound coarse, theatrical, or unexpectedly slangy.
มาก is the neutral baseline
For a dependable everyday description, put มาก after the property: property + มาก. It works in ordinary polite speech and most formal prose. Corpus-based research also finds มาก overwhelmingly more frequent than other Thai intensifiers, which is why it should be the learner's default.
อาหารร้านนี้อร่อยมากครับ
ahan ran ni aroi mak khrap
The food at this restaurant is really delicious. (ordinary polite speech, male speaker)
ห้องประชุมกว้างมากค่ะ
hong prachum kwang mak kha
The meeting room is very spacious. (ordinary polite speech, female speaker)
The property is already the predicate: อาหาร...อร่อย and ห้อง...กว้าง are complete grammatical cores. มาก raises their degree. Inserting เป็น before อร่อย or กว้าง is an English-based error.
โคตร: strong, intimate, and socially risky
As an intensifier, โคตร + property means roughly “damn/insanely/really property.” It is (informal) and often perceived as coarse or (vulgar), although close friends may use it playfully without intending an insult. Avoid it with strangers, customers, senior colleagues, teachers, and in formal writing unless you are deliberately quoting or analyzing slang.
ร้านนี้โคตรอร่อย
ran ni khot aroi
This place is insanely good. (very informal, potentially vulgar; casual peer speech with the polite particle deliberately omitted)
วันนี้รถติดโคตรหนัก
wan ni rot tit khot nak
Traffic is damn heavy today. (very informal, potentially vulgar; frustrated peer speech)
โคตร precedes the property it intensifies, unlike neutral postposed มาก. It can also intensify a negative predicate in highly colloquial speech: โคตรไม่โอเค expresses strong disapproval, with โคตร taking scope over ไม่โอเค “not okay.” This is recognition vocabulary for learners until they understand the relationship well enough to judge its social effect.
วิธีพูดแบบนั้นโคตรไม่โอเค
withi phut baep nan khot mai okhe
Talking that way is absolutely not okay. (very informal, potentially vulgar; strong peer-to-peer disapproval)
The word also has an older lexical meaning connected with lineage or ancestry. The intensifying use has developed pragmatically from a forceful, socially marked source; do not assume every occurrence means “very.”
แสน and แสนจะ: elevated emotional force
แสน + property and แสนจะ + property precede the property. They are (literary) or emotionally elevated rather than neutral conversational equivalents of มาก. They occur in lyrics, literary narration, speeches, sentimental writing, and advertising. Common collocations such as แสนดี “wonderfully good/kind,” แสนสุข “blissfully happy,” and แสนจะดีใจ “extremely delighted” carry an expressive voice.
คุณยายเป็นคนแสนดีค่ะ
khun yai pen khon saen di kha
Grandmother is an exceptionally kind person. (warm, elevated ordinary speech, female speaker; แสนดี modifies คน)
การเดินทางครั้งนั้นแสนยากลำบากครับ
kan doen thang khrang nan saen yak lambak khrap
That journey was exceedingly difficult. (literary/formal narrative, male speaker)
ฉันแสนจะดีใจที่ทุกคนมาค่ะ
chan saen cha di chai thi thuk khon ma kha
I am immensely happy that everyone came. (emotionally elevated polite speech, female speaker)
The first example contains เป็น because คน is a noun predicate: “Grandmother is a person.” แสนดี then modifies that noun after it. This is different from a direct property clause such as คุณยายใจดีมาก “Grandmother is very kind,” which needs no เป็น. Thai also uses no article corresponding to English a before คน.
สุด and สุด ๆ: maximum and emphatic speech
สุด literally evokes an endpoint. In property + ที่สุด, it forms the ordinary superlative “the most property.” In casual speech, property + สุด ๆ is an emphatic “extremely property.” The spelling ๆ is the repeat sign, so สุด ๆ is read สุดสุด. This emphatic pattern is (informal) and often appears in conversation, reviews, advertising, and social media.
หนังเรื่องนี้สนุกสุด ๆ
nang rueang ni sanuk sut sut
This movie is incredibly fun. (informal peer speech; expressive emphasis)
วิวจากห้องนี้สวยสุด ๆ ค่ะ
wio chak hong ni suai sut sut kha
The view from this room is absolutely gorgeous. (enthusiastic informal-polite speech, female speaker)
ร้านนี้เงียบที่สุดในย่านนี้ครับ
ran ni ngiap thi sut nai yan ni khrap
This shop is the quietest in this neighborhood. (ordinary polite speech, male speaker; superlative selection)
Bare property + สุด is also heard as a colloquial shortening of ที่สุด, particularly when the comparison set is obvious: ร้านนี้ดีสุด “this place is best.” Because it may express either maximum selection or loose praise, learners should use ที่สุด for a clear superlative and สุด ๆ for unmistakable informal emphasis. The superlative page treats the selection structure in depth.
| Choice | Productive slot | Typical force | Register |
|---|---|---|---|
| มาก | property + มาก | very | (neutral; formal or informal) |
| โคตร | โคตร + property | damn, insanely | (informal; potentially vulgar) |
| แสน(จะ) | แสน(จะ) + property | exceedingly, wonderfully | (literary/formal/emotive) |
| สุด ๆ | property + สุด ๆ | extremely | (informal/advertising) |
| ที่สุด | property + ที่สุด (+ comparison set) | the most | (neutral) |
| อย่างยิ่ง | property or evaluated phrase + อย่างยิ่ง | highly, greatly | (formal) |
Modification, negation, comparison, and aspect
An intensified property can occur after a noun inside a larger noun phrase. A relative marker often makes the boundary clear: ร้านที่อร่อยมาก “a shop that is very good.” The property still follows the noun rather than moving before it as an English adjective would.
เพื่อนแนะนำร้านที่อร่อยมากใกล้โรงแรมครับ
phuean naenam ran thi aroi mak klai rongraem khrap
A friend recommended a very good restaurant near the hotel. (ordinary polite speech, male speaker; postnominal property modifier)
Negation changes the scale and must be scoped deliberately. ไม่ค่อยแพง means “not very expensive,” while ไม่แพงเลย emphatically means “not expensive at all.” A blunt combination such as โคตรไม่ดี is possible only in strongly informal speech; it does not belong in a polite complaint.
ที่พักนี้ไม่ค่อยแพงค่ะ
thi phak ni mai khoi phaeng kha
This accommodation is not very expensive. (ordinary polite speech, female speaker)
In comparisons, postposed มาก can strengthen the difference: แพงกว่าอีกแห่งมาก “much more expensive than the other place.” Do not insert a preposed English-style “very” before the comparative property.
โรงแรมนี้แพงกว่าอีกแห่งมากครับ
rongraem ni phaeng kwa ik haeng mak khrap
This hotel is much more expensive than the other one. (ordinary polite speech, male speaker)
Aspect and change markers combine with degree expressions in their own slots. ร้อนขึ้นมาก means the increase on the heat scale is large; neither ร้อน nor มาก conjugates.
ช่วงบ่ายอากาศร้อนขึ้นมากค่ะ
chuang bai akat ron khuen mak kha
In the afternoon the weather became much hotter. (ordinary polite speech, female speaker)
Ordinary-polite dialogue
ห้องใหม่เป็นอย่างไรบ้างคะ
hong mai pen yangrai bang kha
How is the new room? (polite question, female speaker)
กว้างมากครับ แล้วก็เงียบมากด้วย
kwang mak khrap laeo ko ngiap mak duai
It's very spacious and very quiet too. (ordinary polite reply, male speaker; omitted subject)
พูดกับเจ้าของห้องว่าโคตรเงียบได้ไหมคะ
phut kap chao khong hong wa khot ngiap dai mai kha
Can I say khot ngiap to the owner? (polite question, female speaker; asking about register)
ไม่เหมาะครับ พูดว่าเงียบมากจะสุภาพกว่า
mai mo khrap phut wa ngiap mak cha suphap kwa
It isn't appropriate. Saying ngiap mak would be more polite. (ordinary polite reply, male speaker)
The question's เป็นอย่างไร is a fixed way to ask for an assessment; it does not put เป็น before the answer's property. The answer uses direct predicates กว้างมาก and เงียบมาก.
Common Mistakes
1. Inserting เป็น before an intensified property
❌ ห้องนี้เป็นกว้างมากครับ
Incorrect—กว้าง is already the predicate.
✅ ห้องจัดเลี้ยงนี้กว้างมากครับ
hong chat liang ni kwang mak khrap
This banquet room is very spacious. (ordinary polite speech, male speaker)
2. Using โคตร in a formal address
❌ เรียนผู้อำนวยการ โครงการนี้โคตรดีครับ
Register error—โคตร is coarse and inappropriate in a formal address.
✅ เรียนผู้อำนวยการ โครงการนี้มีประโยชน์อย่างยิ่งครับ
rian phuamnuaikan khrongkan ni mi prayot yang ying khrap
Director, this project is highly beneficial. (formal respectful speech, male speaker)
3. Putting แสน after the property
❌ คุณครูคนนี้ดีแสนค่ะ
Incorrect placement for the elevated intensifier แสน.
✅ คุณครูคนนี้แสนดีค่ะ
khun khru khon ni saen di kha
This teacher is exceptionally kind. (warm, elevated speech, female speaker)
4. Placing ที่สุด before the property
❌ ร้านนี้ที่สุดอร่อยในตลาด
Incorrect—the property precedes ที่สุด.
✅ ร้านนี้อร่อยที่สุดในตลาดครับ
ran ni aroi thi sut nai talat khrap
This restaurant is the tastiest in the market. (ordinary polite speech, male speaker)
5. Adding หนึ่ง as an English article
❌ เขาเป็นหนึ่งคนใจดีมาก
Incorrect—หนึ่ง is not an indefinite article before a noun predicate.
✅ เขาเป็นคนใจดีมากค่ะ
khao pen khon chai di mak kha
He is a very kind person. (ordinary polite speech, female speaker)
Key Takeaways
Use postposed มาก as the neutral default. Preposed โคตร is powerful but socially risky; preposed แสน(จะ) is elevated and collocational; postposed สุด ๆ is informal emphasis, while ที่สุด makes a clear superlative. All of them modify an uninflected property or phrase, so none supplies—or requires—a general equivalent of English be.
