Thai often repeats a property word with ๆ, the repeat sign ไม้ยมก. In a phrase such as แดง ๆ, the sign repeats the preceding word, so it is read แดงแดง. Property-word reduplication often softens a category to “rather,” “-ish,” or “loosely property,” but that is not a universal rule: different constructions can express distribution, manner, urgency, or even intensification.
Writing and reading the repeat sign
In edited standard Thai, put a space before ๆ and normally another space after the reduplicated unit when more text follows: เล็ก ๆ สองใบ. Write the base once and the sign once; ๆ directs the reader to repeat that whole preceding word aloud. Informal digital writing often omits the spaces, but this guide models the standard spaced form.
ฉันอยากได้กระเป๋าใบเล็ก ๆ ค่ะ
chan yak dai krapao bai lek lek kha
I would like a smallish little bag. (ordinary polite speech, female speaker; postnominal modifier)
ห้องนี้มืด ๆ นะครับ
hong ni muet muet na khrap
This room is kind of dark. (ordinary polite speech, male speaker; softened assessment)
The first เล็ก ๆ modifies กระเป๋า after the noun and classifier ใบ. The second มืด ๆ is the full predicate of the clause and therefore needs no เป็น. The repeated form does not agree with a noun and does not mark English plural.
Attenuation and fuzzy category boundaries
With colors, tastes, dimensions, and sensory properties, reduplication often makes the category less sharply bounded. แดง identifies red; แดง ๆ can mean reddish or red-ish. หวาน ๆ may describe a gently sweet flavor rather than an extreme one. Context still decides whether English should use “somewhat,” “-ish,” “light,” or simply a natural descriptive adjective.
ผนังห้องเป็นสีเทา ๆ ค่ะ
phanang hong pen si thao thao kha
The room's wall is a grayish color. (ordinary polite speech, female speaker; approximate color category)
น้ำซุปมีรสหวาน ๆ ครับ
nam sup mi rot wan wan khrap
The soup has a mildly sweet taste. (ordinary polite speech, male speaker; softened sensory description)
ท้องฟ้าออกสีแดง ๆ ก่อนพระอาทิตย์ตกค่ะ
thong fa ok si daeng daeng kon phra athit tok kha
The sky takes on a reddish color before sunset. (ordinary polite speech, female speaker)
These examples use noun-predicate frames เป็นสี... and มีรส... where a color or taste is named as a noun-like category. A direct property predicate remains possible in the right context: ท้องฟ้าแดง “the sky is red.” English is therefore does not map mechanically to one Thai copula.
| Form | Productive slot | Likely interpretation | Register |
|---|---|---|---|
| แดง | noun + แดง / subject + แดง | red, categorically or contextually | (neutral) |
| แดง ๆ | noun + แดง ๆ / subject + แดง ๆ | reddish, loosely red | (neutral/informal) |
| หวานมาก | property + มาก | very sweet | (neutral) |
| หวาน ๆ | property + ๆ | gently/somewhat sweet, context-dependent | (neutral/informal) |
| เร็ว ๆ | action + manner/command | quickly; in a command, hurry | (informal) |
| มาก ๆ | predicate + intensifier + ๆ | very much; stronger, not weaker | (neutral/informal) |
Why reduplication does not always weaken
The meaning comes from the construction around the repeated form. พูดช้า ๆ normally means “speak slowly/carefully,” not necessarily “speak somewhat slowly.” มาเร็ว ๆ is an urgent request to come quickly. ดูดี ๆ directs someone to look carefully, and มาก ๆ strengthens มาก rather than attenuating it.
ช่วยพูดช้า ๆ หน่อยครับ
chuai phut cha cha noi khrap
Please speak slowly. (ordinary polite request, male speaker; manner)
มาเร็ว ๆ รถจะออกแล้วค่ะ
ma reo reo rot cha ok laeo kha
Hurry up—the vehicle is about to leave. (urgent but ordinary speech, female speaker)
ตรวจเอกสารดี ๆ ก่อนส่งนะครับ
truat ekkasan di di kon song na khrap
Check the document carefully before sending it. (ordinary polite advice, male speaker)
ขอบคุณมาก ๆ ค่ะ
khopkhun mak mak kha
Thank you very much. (warm ordinary polite speech, female speaker; intensification)
Spoken Thai can also use special pitch, length, and expressive delivery on a repeated property to intensify it. Ordinary spelling with ๆ does not encode that prosody reliably. This is why a written form such as สวย ๆ cannot be assigned one automatic scalar formula without its sentence and discourse context.
Academic descriptions of Thai reduplication identify attenuation, intensification, distribution, plurality-like readings, aspect, and modality among its functions. The honest rule is therefore construction-specific: memorize recurring frames and interpret new ones from the base word, syntactic position, and situation.
Negation and comparison usually choose clearer devices
Reduplication is not the regular way to make a negative property milder. Use ไม่ค่อย + property for “not very property”: ไม่ค่อยหวาน “not very sweet.” ไม่หวาน ๆ does not productively mean “slightly not sweet.”
ชานี้ไม่ค่อยหวานค่ะ
cha ni mai khoi wan kha
This tea is not very sweet. (ordinary polite speech, female speaker)
Likewise, comparison normally uses กว่า plus an explicit small difference such as นิดหน่อย. เล็กกว่านิดหน่อย is clear “a little smaller”; attaching กว่า directly after a reduplicated property is not the standard learner pattern.
กล่องใบนี้เล็กกว่าใบนั้นนิดหน่อยครับ
klong bai ni lek kwa bai nan nit noi khrap
This box is a little smaller than that one. (ordinary polite speech, male speaker)
See the degree page and intensifier page for more reliable scalar choices.
Aspectual compatibility
A reduplicated property can occur in a continuing state or at the beginning of a change. ยัง...อยู่ maintains the softened state; เริ่ม...แล้ว locates its onset. The property form itself remains uninflected.
ข้างนอกยังมืด ๆ อยู่ครับ
khang nok yang muet muet yu khrap
It is still rather dark outside. (ordinary polite speech, male speaker; continuing attenuated state)
มะม่วงเริ่มออกสีเหลือง ๆ แล้วค่ะ
mamuang roem ok si lueang lueang laeo kha
The mango is starting to turn yellowish. (ordinary polite speech, female speaker; onset of color change)
In formal technical writing, a fuzzy reduplicated property may be too imprecise. Use an explicit measure, เล็กน้อย “slightly,” ค่อนข้าง “rather,” or a defined category instead. This is a precision issue, not a separate formal grammar.
Ordinary-polite dialogue
อยากได้เสื้อสีไหนคะ
yak dai suea si nai kha
What color shirt would you like? (polite question, female speaker)
อยากได้สีฟ้าอ่อน ๆ ครับ
yak dai si fa on on khrap
I would like a light, soft blue. (ordinary polite reply, male speaker)
ตัวนี้สีเข้มไปไหมคะ
tua ni si khem pai mai kha
Is this one too dark? (polite question, female speaker)
เข้มไปนิดหนึ่งครับ ขออ่อนกว่านี้หน่อย
khem pai nit nueng khrap kho on kwa ni noi
It is a little too dark. Could I have a lighter one? (ordinary polite reply, male speaker)
The reply uses อ่อน ๆ as a fuzzy desired color in the first turn, then the explicit comparison อ่อนกว่า when contrasting an item in view. The clothing noun is omitted after the shop context establishes it.
Common Mistakes
1. Writing multiple repeat signs for one ordinary repetition
❌ อยากได้กล่องเล็ก ๆ ๆ ค่ะ
Incorrect—one ๆ already repeats the preceding word once.
✅ อยากได้กล่องใบเล็ก ๆ ค่ะ
yak dai klong bai lek lek kha
I would like a smallish box. (ordinary polite speech, female speaker)
2. Assuming every reduplication attenuates
❌ มาเร็ว ๆ แปลว่ามาค่อนข้างเร็ว
Incorrect interpretation—in a command, มาเร็ว ๆ normally urges someone to hurry.
✅ มาเร็ว ๆ แปลว่าให้รีบมาครับ
ma reo reo plae wa hai rip ma khrap
Ma reo reo means to hurry and come. (ordinary polite explanation, male speaker)
3. Inserting เป็น before a direct property
❌ ห้องนี้เป็นมืด ๆ ครับ
Incorrect—มืด ๆ can predicate directly.
✅ ทางเดินนี้มืด ๆ ครับ
thang doen ni muet muet khrap
This corridor is kind of dark. (ordinary polite speech, male speaker)
4. Using reduplication as ordinary negative degree
❌ กาแฟนี้ไม่ขม ๆ ค่ะ
Incorrect for 'not very bitter'—use ไม่ค่อย before the property.
✅ กาแฟแก้วนี้ไม่ค่อยขมค่ะ
kafae kaeo ni mai khoi khom kha
This coffee is not very bitter. (ordinary polite speech, female speaker)
5. Translating English “a” with หนึ่ง
❌ ฉันอยากได้หนึ่งกระเป๋าใบเล็ก ๆ
Incorrect when หนึ่ง merely copies the English article and no exact count is intended.
✅ ฉันอยากได้กระเป๋าสีอ่อนใบเล็ก ๆ ค่ะ
chan yak dai krapao si on bai lek lek kha
I would like a small, light-colored bag. (ordinary polite speech, female speaker)
Key Takeaways
Write a property once plus ๆ, and read the property twice. Attenuation is common with fuzzy colors, tastes, and dimensions, but reduplication can instead mark manner, urgency, distribution, or intensification. It is not agreement, plural inflection, or a substitute for every degree expression; interpret it from the complete construction.
