Thai can repeat a verb to present activity as reiterated, continuing, casual, tentative, imprecisely bounded, or distributed across occasions. Standard writing normally prints the verb once followed by ๆ: เดิน ๆ is read เดินเดิน, and RTGS writes the audible repetition as doen doen. The symbol is not pronounced mai yamok inside the sentence.
There is no single English suffix for this system. Depending on the verb and context, English may use keep V-ing, V now and then, V around, try V-ing a little, or a paired expression such as start and stop. These readings are related but not mechanically predictable. Verb meaning, neighboring predicates, aspect, and situation all matter.
The main construction types
| Pattern | Common contribution | Natural model |
|---|---|---|
| V ๆ | iteration, continuation, or loosely bounded activity | ลองกด ๆ ดู |
| V1 ๆ V2 ๆ | alternation or repeated phases | เดิน ๆ หยุด ๆ |
| V ๆ ไปก่อน | continue provisionally for now | ทำ ๆ ไปก่อน |
| V ๆ ดู | try or explore the action without a sharply fixed endpoint | ถาม ๆ ดู |
| V ๆ กันไป | shared activity continuing over time | คุย ๆ กันไป |
| exact counted repetition | use ครั้ง or รอบ, not reduplication alone | อ่านสองรอบ |
เขาเดิน ๆ หยุด ๆ เพราะเจ็บเข่าค่ะ
khao doen doen yut yut phro chep khao kha
He keeps walking and stopping because his knee hurts. (ordinary polite speech, female speaker; alternating phases)
วันหยุดผมก็กิน ๆ นอน ๆ อยู่บ้านครับ
wan yut phom ko kin kin non non yu ban khrap
On days off I mostly just eat and sleep at home. (ordinary polite speech, male speaker; loosely repeated routine)
ลองกด ๆ ดูครับ เผื่อปุ่มค้าง
long kot kot du khrap phuea pum khang
Try pressing it a few times; the button may be stuck. (ordinary polite suggestion, male speaker)
The first two examples repeat two separate verbs and present a pattern rather than two exactly counted events. The third makes the pressing exploratory and not tightly counted. Research on Thai verbal reduplication identifies continuation and reiteration alongside imprecision, low agency, urging, and idiomatic readings; reducing everything to “do twice” is therefore inaccurate.
Repeated phases and alternation
Two repeated predicates can depict an event that cycles between states or activities. This is especially natural when the phases contrast: moving and stopping, turning on and off, opening and closing, eating and sleeping.
ไฟดวงนี้ติด ๆ ดับ ๆ มาหลายวันแล้วครับ
fai duang ni tit tit dap dap ma lai wan laeo khrap
This light has been flickering on and off for several days. (ordinary polite speech, male speaker)
อย่าเปิด ๆ ปิด ๆ ประตูค่ะ แอร์ออกหมด
ya poet poet pit pit pratu kha ae ok mot
Please stop opening and closing the door; all the cool air is escaping. (firm polite request, female speaker)
ช่วงนี้ฉันทำงาน ๆ หยุด ๆ เพราะไม่สบายค่ะ
chuang ni chan tham ngan tham ngan yut yut phro mai sabai kha
Lately I've been working in fits and starts because I'm unwell. (ordinary polite speech, female speaker)
The repeated pair behaves as a larger predicate pattern. มาหลายวันแล้ว in the first sentence measures the whole on-and-off situation up to now. It does not attach a perfect ending to either ติด or ดับ.
Provisional and loosely bounded action
With ไปก่อน, a reduplicated activity can be presented as something to continue provisionally until circumstances become clearer. The repetition avoids committing to one sharply delimited accomplishment.
ทำ ๆ ไปก่อนค่ะ เดี๋ยวหัวหน้ามาตรวจ
tham tham pai kon kha diao huana ma truat
Keep working on it for now; the supervisor will come check it shortly. (ordinary polite instruction, female speaker)
คุย ๆ กันไปก่อนครับ ยังไม่ต้องรีบตัดสินใจ
khui khui kan pai kon khrap yang mai tong rip tatsinchai
Let's keep talking it through for now; there is no need to decide quickly. (ordinary polite suggestion, male speaker)
เลือก ๆ ไว้สองสามแบบก่อนก็ได้ค่ะ
lueak lueak wai song sam baep kon ko dai kha
You can shortlist two or three options for now. (ordinary polite suggestion, female speaker)
This use can sound deliberately noncommittal. ทำ ๆ ไป may imply “carry on somehow for now,” not careful completion of a defined job. That pragmatic looseness is useful, but it would be a poor choice in a formal safety procedure requiring exact steps.
Exploratory V ๆ ดู
Following ดู can frame an action as a trial or exploration. With a reduplicated verb, the speaker often suggests sampling, asking around, looking in several places, or trying without guaranteeing a result.
ลองถาม ๆ ดูครับ อาจมีคนเห็นกระเป๋า
long tham tham du khrap at mi khon hen krapao
Try asking around; someone may have seen the bag. (ordinary polite suggestion, male speaker)
ฉันจะมอง ๆ หาร้านที่เงียบกว่านี้ค่ะ
chan cha mong mong ha ran thi ngiap kwa ni kha
I'll look around for a quieter place. (ordinary polite speech, female speaker)
อ่าน ๆ ดูก่อนนะคะ ถ้าไม่เข้าใจค่อยถาม
an an du kon na kha tha mai khao chai khoi tham
Read through it a bit first; ask afterward if you don't understand. (polite instruction, female speaker)
These sequences contain meaningful predicates, not an inflected verb plus an infinitive. ลอง introduces trying, the reduplicated verb shapes the activity, and ดู adds an exploratory viewpoint. The exact division of labor varies by lexical combination.
A slight or noncommittal outward action
Some repeated single verbs present a bodily or communicative action as slight, casual, or hard to delimit. ยิ้ม ๆ may be “smile faintly/just smile,” while พยักหน้า ๆ can present repeated nodding. Context can also supply an emotional stance.
เขายิ้ม ๆ แล้วไม่ตอบอะไรครับ
khao yim yim laeo mai top arai khrap
He just gave a slight smile and didn't answer. (ordinary polite narration, male speaker)
คุณยายพยักหน้า ๆ เหมือนจะจำได้ค่ะ
khun yai phayak na phayak na muean cha cham dai kha
Grandmother nodded a little, as though she remembered. (ordinary polite narration, female speaker)
Not every verb accepts this interpretation naturally. Telic creation verbs, highly formal institutional predicates, and semantically complex verbs may prefer explicit aspect or quantity instead. There is no honest universal rule saying “repeat any verb to weaken it.” Learn productive conversational frames and established combinations.
Exact number, habituality, and aspect
Reduplication leaves the repetition count open. If the count matters, use ครั้ง or รอบ. Habitual frequency likewise becomes clearer with expressions such as ทุกวัน, บ่อย ๆ, or เดือนละสองครั้ง.
ผมอ่านสัญญาสองรอบก่อนเซ็นครับ
phom an sanya song rop kon sen khrap
I read the contract twice before signing. (ordinary polite speech, male speaker; exact count)
เธอโทร ๆ มาตลอดบ่ายแต่ผมไม่ได้รับครับ
thoe tho tho ma talot bai tae phom mai dai rap khrap
She kept calling all afternoon, but I didn't answer. (ordinary polite report, male speaker; open repetition)
In the second example, ตลอดบ่าย bounds the repeated calling period, while ไม่ได้รับ denies answering. Negation does not move after the reduplication by English auxiliary logic. The verbs remain invariant.
The habituality page treats regular recurrence; the stative reduplication page treats fuzzy colors, sizes, and qualities. These uses overlap historically and semantically, but their immediate constructions differ.
Ordinary-polite dialogue
เมื่อกี้เห็นคุณเดิน ๆ หยุด ๆ อยู่หน้าห้อง เป็นอะไรหรือเปล่าคะ
muea ki hen khun doen doen yut yut yu na hong pen arai rue plao kha
I just saw you pacing and stopping outside the room. Is something wrong? (polite question, female speaker)
กำลังคิดว่าจะคุยกับหัวหน้าดีไหมครับ
kamlang khit wa cha khui kap huana di mai khrap
I'm wondering whether I should speak with the supervisor. (ordinary polite reply, male speaker)
ถ้ายังกังวล ลองคุย ๆ ดูก่อนได้ค่ะ
tha yang kangwon long khui khui du kon dai kha
If you're still worried, you could try talking it through first. (supportive polite suggestion, female speaker)
ครับ เดี๋ยวผมลองถาม ๆ ดู
khrap diao phom long tham tham du
All right. I'll try asking around a little. (ordinary polite reply, male speaker)
Common Mistakes
1. Omitting standard spaces around ๆ
❌ เขาเดินๆหยุดๆหน้าร้านค่ะ
Nonstandard spacing—standard Thai separates the repetition mark from surrounding words.
✅ เขาเดิน ๆ หยุด ๆ อยู่หน้าร้านค่ะ
khao doen doen yut yut yu na ran kha
He keeps walking and stopping in front of the shop. (ordinary polite speech, female speaker)
2. Treating reduplication as exactly two events
❌ โทร ๆ มาหมายถึงโทรสองครั้งเท่านั้นครับ
Incorrect interpretation—reduplication leaves the number of calls open.
✅ เขาโทรมาสองครั้งตอนเช้าครับ
khao tho ma song khrang ton chao khrap
He called twice this morning. (ordinary polite speech, male speaker; exact count)
3. Assuming every verb becomes “a little”
❌ ไฟติด ๆ ดับ ๆ แปลว่าไฟติดนิดหน่อยค่ะ
Incorrect—the paired repetition describes alternation between on and off.
✅ ไฟในครัวติด ๆ ดับ ๆ ค่ะ
fai nai khrua tit tit dap dap kha
The kitchen light keeps flickering on and off. (ordinary polite speech, female speaker)
4. Adding reduplication merely because the subject is plural
❌ เด็กหลายคนวิ่ง ๆ ไปสนามครับ
Wrong for the intended simple plural event; Thai verbs do not reduplicate to agree with plural subjects.
✅ เด็กหลายคนวิ่งไปสนามพร้อมกันครับ
dek lai khon wing pai sanam phrom kan khrap
Several children ran to the field together. (ordinary polite speech, male speaker)
5. Putting ไม่ inside an intended alternating pattern
❌ เขาเดินไม่ ๆ เพราะเจ็บขาค่ะ
Incorrect—ไม่ is not an iteration marker after the verb.
✅ เขาเดิน ๆ พัก ๆ เพราะเจ็บขาค่ะ
khao doen doen phak phak phro chep kha kha
He walks and rests in turns because his leg hurts. (ordinary polite speech, female speaker)
Key Takeaways
- Write a repeated verb once plus ๆ, space the mark conventionally, and repeat the verb in RTGS.
- A single repeated verb can make activity iterative, continuing, exploratory, slight, or loosely bounded.
- Repeated verb pairs often present alternating phases; exact counts instead require ครั้ง or รอบ.
- Reduplication is construction-sensitive, not tense, agreement, or a universal “do a little” rule.
