Thai color expressions can be full predicates or postnominal modifiers. รถคันนี้สีแดง means “this car is red,” while รถสีแดงคันนี้ means “this red car.” Neither construction requires a form of English be. The important choice is instead between a full color expression with สี “color” and a bare color root such as แดง “red,” which often sounds especially natural with degree, comparison, or change.
Naming colors with สี
When naming a color as a category, the safest pattern is สี + color term. It is especially useful with terms that are also ordinary nouns: ส้ม can mean an orange fruit, น้ำตาล can mean sugar, and ฟ้า can mean the sky. สีส้ม, สีน้ำตาล, and สีฟ้า identify the intended color reading immediately.
| Color expression | RTGS | Usual English category |
|---|---|---|
| สีแดง | si daeng | red |
| สีเหลือง | si lueang | yellow |
| สีเขียว | si khiao | green |
| สีดำ / สีขาว | si dam / si khao | black / white |
| สีฟ้า | si fa | light or sky blue |
| สีน้ำเงิน | si nam ngoen | blue, often darker than สีฟ้า |
| สีชมพู / สีม่วง | si chomphu / si muang | pink / purple |
| สีเทา / สีน้ำตาล / สีส้ม | si thao / si namtan / si som | gray / brown / orange |
Color boundaries do not match English perfectly in every object or community. The familiar practical contrast สีฟ้า versus สีน้ำเงิน often divides lighter sky-blue shades from darker blue, but real naming still depends on the object, shade, and speaker.
ฉันชอบสีส้มค่ะ แต่ไม่ค่อยชอบกินส้ม
chan chop si som kha tae mai khoi chop kin som
I like the color orange, but I don't really like eating oranges. (ordinary polite speech, female speaker; สี disambiguates the color)
โลโก้ใหม่ใช้สีน้ำเงินเข้มครับ
loko mai chai si nam ngoen khem khrap
The new logo uses dark blue. (ordinary polite speech, male speaker)
Color as a direct predicate
The pattern subject + color expression states an object's color directly. There is no general color copula.
รถคันนี้สีแดงครับ
rot khan ni si daeng khrap
This car is red. (ordinary polite speech, male speaker)
กำแพงด้านนี้ขาวมากค่ะ
kamphaeng dan ni khao mak kha
This side of the wall is very white. (ordinary polite speech, female speaker; bare color root with degree)
เสื้อตัวนี้ดำเกินไปครับ
suea tua ni dam koen pai khrap
This shirt is too black/dark. (ordinary polite speech, male speaker; bare root with excessive degree)
The bare roots ขาว and ดำ behave as property predicates: they take มาก and เกินไป directly and remain uninflected. รถคันนี้สีแดง uses the conventional color expression สีแดง as its predicate. The zero-copula page explains why English is adds nothing here.
รถคันนี้เป็นสีแดง is also grammatical, but it packages สีแดง as the color category assigned to the car. This construction is particularly natural when specifying a category or result: เปลี่ยนเป็นสีแดง “change to red.” It does not prove that every English “be + color” requires เป็น, and เป็นแดง is not the neutral learner pattern.
เมื่อก่อนประตูสีขาว ตอนนี้เปลี่ยนเป็นสีเขียวแล้วค่ะ
muea kon pratu si khao ton ni plian pen si khiao laeo kha
The door used to be white; now it has been changed to green. (ordinary polite speech, female speaker; result category with เป็นสี)
Postnominal color modifiers
A color modifier follows its noun. With a classifier and demonstrative, the common order is noun + color + classifier + demonstrative: รถสีแดงคันนี้, เสื้อสีฟ้าตัวนั้น, กระเป๋าสีดำใบโน้น. English places the color before the noun, so this order must be learned as a Thai noun-phrase pattern rather than translated word by word.
ฉันชอบเสื้อสีฟ้าตัวนั้นค่ะ
chan chop suea si fa tua nan kha
I like that light-blue shirt. (ordinary polite speech, female speaker; postnominal color modifier)
ช่วยหยิบกระเป๋าสีดำใบโน้นให้หน่อยครับ
chuai yip krapao si dam bai non hai noi khrap
Please pass me that black bag over there. (ordinary polite request, male speaker)
รถสีขาวคันนี้เป็นรถรับส่งของบริษัทค่ะ
rot si khao khan ni pen rot rap song khong borisat kha
This white car is the company's shuttle vehicle. (ordinary polite speech, female speaker; color modifier plus noun identity predicate)
The last example contains เป็น because the predicate is the noun phrase รถรับส่งของบริษัท, not because สีขาว needs a copula. Thai also has no article corresponding mechanically to English a/the. Classifiers and demonstratives identify the intended object by their own system; see attributive position.
| Function | Productive frame | Example substitution |
|---|---|---|
| Color predicate | subject + สี + color | รถคันนี้ + สีแดง |
| Bare graded predicate | subject + color root + degree | เสื้อตัวนี้ + ดำ + มาก |
| Postnominal modifier | noun + สี + color + classifier + demonstrative | รถ + สีขาว + คัน + นี้ |
| Denied property | subject + ไม่ + color root | รถคันนี้ + ไม่ + ดำ |
| Denied category | subject + ไม่ใช่ + สี + color | สีนี้ + ไม่ใช่ + สีดำ |
| Change into a category | subject + เปลี่ยนเป็น + สี + color | ประตู + เปลี่ยนเป็น + สีเขียว |
Negating a property versus denying a category
ไม่ + bare color root denies or scales down the color property: ไม่ดำ “not black/dark.” ไม่ใช่สีดำ rejects a color label: “it is not the color black.” The first is property negation; the second uses ไม่ใช่ because two categories are being contrasted.
รถคันนี้ไม่ดำ เป็นสีน้ำเงินเข้มครับ
rot khan ni mai dam pen si nam ngoen khem khrap
This car isn't black; it's dark blue. (ordinary polite speech, male speaker)
สีบนหน้าจอไม่ใช่สีเทาค่ะ เป็นสีเขียวอ่อน
si bon nacho mai chai si thao kha pen si khiao on
The color on the screen isn't gray; it's light green. (ordinary polite speech, female speaker)
This distinction shows again why English be cannot be assigned one Thai equivalent. Direct color properties take no copula, category denial uses ไม่ใช่, and a resulting category can use เป็นสี....
Shade, comparison, and change
Shade modifiers follow the color expression: สีแดงเข้ม “dark/deep red,” สีฟ้าอ่อน “light blue,” and สีแดงสด “bright/vivid red.” They do not move before สี in English order.
ผ้าม่านสีแดงเข้มเข้ากับโซฟาครับ
phaman si daeng khem khao kap sofa khrap
The dark-red curtains go well with the sofa. (ordinary polite speech, male speaker)
Comparison places กว่า after the color or shade property. แดงกว่า compares redness; สีเข้มกว่า compares overall color depth.
ตัวอย่างด้านซ้ายแดงกว่าด้านขวาค่ะ
tuayang dan sai daeng kwa dan khwa kha
The sample on the left is redder than the one on the right. (ordinary polite speech, female speaker)
สูทตัวนี้สีเข้มกว่าอีกตัวครับ
sut tua ni si khem kwa ik tua khrap
This suit is darker in color than the other one. (ordinary polite speech, male speaker)
Color roots also combine naturally with change and aspect expressions. เริ่มเหลืองแล้ว marks entry into a yellow state; ซีดลง marks decreasing saturation. The roots do not conjugate.
ใบไม้เริ่มเหลืองแล้วค่ะ
bai mai roem lueang laeo kha
The leaves have started turning yellow. (ordinary polite speech, female speaker)
เสื้อตัวนี้ซักหลายครั้งแล้ว สีเลยซีดลงมากครับ
suea tua ni sak lai khrang laeo si loei sit long mak khrap
This shirt has been washed many times, so its color has faded a lot. (ordinary polite speech, male speaker)
Reduplicated แดง ๆ can make a fuzzy “reddish” category, while แดงมาก raises degree. These are different operations; see property-word reduplication.
Ordinary-polite dialogue
กำลังหากระเป๋าสีอะไรคะ
kamlang ha krapao si arai kha
What color bag are you looking for? (polite question, female speaker)
อยากได้สีน้ำตาลอ่อนครับ
yak dai si namtan on khrap
I would like light brown. (ordinary polite reply, male speaker; noun omitted from context)
ใบนี้อ่อนไปไหมคะ
bai ni on pai mai kha
Is this one too light? (polite question, female speaker)
กำลังดีครับ แต่ขอดูใบใหญ่กว่านี้หน่อย
kamlang di khrap tae kho du bai yai kwa ni noi
The color is just right, but could I see a larger one? (ordinary polite reply, male speaker)
Once the bag and its color scale are active, speakers omit repeated material naturally. ใบนี้ refers to the bag through its classifier; อ่อน predicates directly of the understood shade.
Common Mistakes
1. Putting the color before its noun
❌ ฉันชอบสีแดงรถคันนั้น
Incorrect—an attributive color follows the noun.
✅ ฉันชอบรถสีแดงคันนั้นค่ะ
chan chop rot si daeng khan nan kha
I like that red car. (ordinary polite speech, female speaker)
2. Inserting เป็น before a bare color root
❌ รถคันนี้เป็นแดงครับ
Incorrect as a neutral color property; use a direct color predicate or เป็นสีแดง as a category frame.
✅ รถของผมสีแดงครับ
rot khong phom si daeng khrap
My car is red. (ordinary polite speech, male speaker)
3. Reversing color and shade
❌ เสื้อตัวนี้เข้มสีฟ้าค่ะ
Incorrect—เข้ม follows the color expression.
✅ เสื้อตัวนี้สีฟ้าเข้มค่ะ
suea tua ni si fa khem kha
This shirt is dark blue. (ordinary polite speech, female speaker)
4. Putting ไม่ after the property
❌ กระเป๋าใบนี้สีดำไม่ครับ
Incorrect—ไม่ precedes the bare property or ไม่ใช่ precedes a denied category.
✅ กระเป๋าใบนี้ไม่ดำครับ
krapao bai ni mai dam khrap
This bag isn't black. (ordinary polite speech, male speaker)
5. Adding หนึ่ง as an English article
❌ สีที่ฉันชอบคือหนึ่งสีเขียว
Incorrect—Thai noun predicates do not require an equivalent of English 'a.'
✅ สีที่ฉันชอบที่สุดคือสีเขียวค่ะ
si thi chan chop thi sut khue si khiao kha
My favorite color is green. (ordinary polite speech, female speaker; equational คือ)
Key Takeaways
Use สี + term to name a color clearly, especially when the bare term has another meaning. Color predicates need no general copula, and color modifiers follow their noun before a classifier-demonstrative sequence. Bare roots combine naturally with negation, degree, comparison, and change; เป็นสี... remains available when Thai packages the color as a category or result.
