มาก, เกินไป, พอ, and Degree

Thai places ordinary degree expressions after the property or action they grade. แพงมาก means “very expensive,” แพงเกินไป means “too expensive,” and ถูกพอ means “cheap enough.” The property stays unchanged; degree is expressed by a following word or phrase. Unlike English very and too, Thai มาก and เกินไป follow the property; พอ resembles postposed English enough in this respect.

The three meanings are not interchangeable. มาก reports a high point, เกินไป judges that a limit has been crossed, and พอ says that a relevant requirement has been met. The beginner page on degree with มาก develops the neutral high-degree pattern; this page contrasts it with excess and sufficiency.

Three different scales

DegreeProductive frameMeaningHidden standard
highproperty/action + มากvery / greatlyabove an ordinary contextual level
excessproperty/action + เกินไปtoo / excessivelybeyond a useful or acceptable limit
sufficiencyproperty/action + พอenough / sufficientlymeets a purpose or threshold
insufficiencyยังไม่ + property + พอnot ... enough yetthreshold not yet reached

ห้องประชุมนี้ใหญ่มากค่ะ

hong prachum ni yai mak kha

This meeting room is very large. (ordinary polite speech, female speaker; high degree)

ห้องประชุมนี้ใหญ่เกินไปสำหรับสองคนครับ

hong prachum ni yai koen pai samrap song khon khrap

This meeting room is too large for two people. (ordinary polite speech, male speaker; exceeds a practical standard)

ห้องประชุมนี้ใหญ่พอสำหรับสิบสองคนค่ะ

hong prachum ni yai pho samrap sip song khon kha

This meeting room is large enough for twelve people. (ordinary polite speech, female speaker; meets a capacity standard)

The adjective-like property ใหญ่ does not change. The degree expression chooses how the speaker relates the size to a contextual standard.

💡
Translate the judgment, not just the size. มาก says “high”; เกินไป says “higher than acceptable”; พอ says “meets the requirement.” A large amount is not automatically excessive.

มาก: high degree without necessary criticism

property + มาก is the broad neutral pattern. It can also follow an action or mental-state predicate to grade intensity or extent.

วันนี้อากาศที่กรุงเทพฯ ร้อนมากครับ

wan ni akat thi krungthep ron mak khrap

The weather in Bangkok is very hot today. (ordinary polite speech, male speaker)

ลูกค้าชอบแบบใหม่นี้มากค่ะ

luk kha chop baep mai ni mak kha

The client likes this new design very much. (ordinary polite speech, female speaker; degree of liking)

ช่วงนี้ผมทำงานมากครับ

chuang ni phom thamngan mak khrap

I've been working a lot lately. (ordinary polite speech, male speaker; extent of activity)

The last example does not make มาก an adjective modifying “work.” It measures the amount or extent of doing. Context supplies the present-time frame; มาก does not mark tense.

For emphatic conversation, มาก raises expressive force. It is (informal/ordinary) rather than a precise measurement.

ขอบคุณมาก ๆ ค่ะที่มาช่วย

khopkhun mak mak kha thi ma chuai

Thank you so much for coming to help. (warm ordinary speech, female speaker)

เกินไป: a limit has been crossed

property + เกินไป evaluates a degree as excessive for some goal, person, budget, or situation. The limit may be stated or understood.

กระเป๋าใบนี้หนักเกินไปครับ

krapao bai ni nak koen pai khrap

This bag is too heavy. (ordinary polite speech, male speaker; acceptable carrying limit understood)

เสียงเพลงดังเกินไปสำหรับห้องเล็กค่ะ

siang phleng dang koen pai samrap hong lek kha

The music is too loud for a small room. (ordinary polite speech, female speaker; standard stated with สำหรับ)

รายงานยาวเกินไปที่จะอ่านจบก่อนประชุมครับ

raingan yao koen pai thi cha an chop kon prachum khrap

The report is too long to finish before the meeting. (ordinary polite speech, male speaker; consequence stated with ที่จะ)

The pattern เกินไปที่จะ + action says that the excessive degree prevents or challenges the following outcome. Thai keeps the degree after the property, unlike English too long, where too comes first.

Actions can also exceed a socially expected amount:

เขาพูดมากเกินไปจนคนอื่นไม่มีโอกาสตอบค่ะ

khao phut mak koen pai chon khon uen mai mi okat top kha

He talks too much, so the others have no chance to respond. (ordinary polite assessment, female speaker; amount of talking is excessive)

Here มาก contributes amount and เกินไป evaluates that amount as beyond a limit. With a gradable property, the shorter แพงเกินไป or ช้าเกินไป is usually enough.

พอ: a threshold is reached

property + พอ means that the property reaches a requirement. The purpose can follow with สำหรับ + noun or ที่จะ + clause.

โต๊ะตัวนี้ยาวพอสำหรับหกคนครับ

to tua ni yao pho samrap hok khon khrap

This table is long enough for six people. (ordinary polite speech, male speaker; purpose stated with สำหรับ)

ตัวหนังสือใหญ่พอที่จะอ่านจากด้านหลังค่ะ

tua nangsue yai pho thi cha an chak dan lang kha

The letters are large enough to read from the back. (ordinary polite speech, female speaker; resulting ability stated with ที่จะ)

ตอนนี้ข้อมูลชัดเจนพอที่จะตัดสินใจแล้วครับ

ton ni khomun chat chen pho thi cha tatsinchai laeo khrap

The information is now clear enough to make a decision. (formal-neutral polite speech, male speaker; sufficient state reached)

The standard is purpose-dependent. A room can be ใหญ่พอ “large enough” for a meeting but not for a concert. พอ does not mean a permanently medium degree.

💡
Add the purpose while learning sufficiency: ชัดพอที่จะอ่าน, ใหญ่พอสำหรับสิบคน. It exposes the threshold and prevents vague word-for-word use of English enough.

พอ versus พอดี

พอ means “enough.” พอดี often means “exactly right,” “just right,” or “happen to,” depending on construction. They overlap around suitability but are not interchangeable.

มีอาหารพอสำหรับทุกคนค่ะ

mi ahan pho samrap thuk khon kha

There is enough food for everyone. (ordinary polite speech, female speaker; sufficient quantity)

รองเท้าคู่นี้พอดีครับ ไม่คับไม่หลวม

rongthao khu ni phodi khrap mai khap mai luam

This pair of shoes fits just right—not tight and not loose. (ordinary polite speech, male speaker; exact suitability)

ผมเจอคุณนิดที่สถานีพอดีครับ

phom choe khun nit thi sathani phodi khrap

I happened to meet Khun Nit at the station. (ordinary polite speech, male speaker; coincidental timing, not degree sufficiency)

This lexical range is genuinely arbitrary enough to learn by construction. Do not replace every English enough with พอดี.

Negation and scope

Degree distinctions remain visible under negation.

PatternMeaningWhat remains possible
ไม่แพงnot expensiveneutral or cheap
ไม่แพงมากnot very expensivesomewhat expensive
ไม่แพงเกินไปnot too expensiveexpensive but acceptable
ยังไม่ถูกพอnot cheap enough yetthreshold still unmet

โรงแรมนี้ไม่แพงมากค่ะ

rongraem ni mai phaeng mak kha

This hotel isn't very expensive. (ordinary polite speech, female speaker; high degree denied)

ราคานี้ไม่สูงเกินไปสำหรับบริษัทครับ

rakha ni mai sung koen pai samrap borisat khrap

This price is not too high for the company. (ordinary polite speech, male speaker; excessive reading denied)

แบบร่างยังไม่ชัดพอค่ะ ต้องเพิ่มตัวอย่างอีก

baep rang yang mai chat pho kha tong phoem tuayang ik

The draft isn't clear enough yet; we need to add another example. (ordinary polite speech, female speaker; threshold not reached)

ไม่แพงมาก does not logically mean “cheap,” just as English not very expensive does not. Thai listeners infer the likely range from context.

Degree with comparison and change

Degree can measure a comparative difference or a change. ดีกว่ามาก means “much better,” while ดีขึ้นมาก means “improved a lot.” Order keeps the relations distinct.

เส้นทางใหม่นี้สั้นกว่าเดิมมากครับ

sen thang mai ni san kwa doem mak khrap

This new route is much shorter than the previous one. (ordinary polite speech, male speaker; มาก grades comparative difference)

หลังซ่อมแล้วเสียงเบาลงมากค่ะ

lang som laeo siang bao long mak kha

After the repair, the sound became much quieter. (ordinary polite speech, female speaker; มาก grades the amount of change)

Do not place มาก between the property and กว่า when it is the difference that is large. The sequence ดีกว่ามาก packages comparative first, degree second.

Another พอ: temporal “once/when”

At the beginning of a clause, พอ + event can mean “when/as soon as,” which is not the degree use.

พอถึงบ้านก็โทรหาผมนะครับ

pho thueng ban ko tho ha phom na khrap

Call me when you get home. (polite, male request; clause-initial temporal พอ)

Compare this with เสียงดังพอ “the sound is loud enough,” where พอ follows a gradable property. Position and complement shape distinguish the meanings.

Ordinary-polite dialogue

ห้องเล็กเกินไปสำหรับการอบรมไหมคะ

hong lek koen pai samrap kan oprom mai kha

Is the room too small for the training session? (polite, female question; excess relative to purpose)

ไม่เล็กเกินไปครับ แต่เก้าอี้ยังไม่พอสำหรับทุกคน

mai lek koen pai khrap tae kaoi yang mai pho samrap thuk khon

It isn't too small, but there still aren't enough chairs for everyone. (polite, male reply; acceptable size versus insufficient quantity)

The reply shows two constructions: property + เกินไป and noun/existence + ไม่พอ. English uses enough in both domains, but Thai syntax depends on what is being measured.

Common Mistakes

1. Putting the degree word before the property

❌ ห้องนี้มากกว้างค่ะ

Incorrect English-like order—มาก follows the property.

✅ ห้องรับแขกกว้างมากค่ะ

hong rap khaek kwang mak kha

The living room is very spacious. (ordinary polite speech, female speaker)

2. Treating มาก and เกินไป as synonyms

❌ อาหารอร่อยเกินไปครับ

Wrong for the intended neutral praise—เกินไป presents deliciousness as beyond an acceptable limit.

✅ แกงร้านนี้อร่อยมากครับ

kaeng ran ni aroi mak khrap

The curry at this restaurant is very delicious. (ordinary polite praise, male speaker)

3. Copying English pre-property enough

❌ โต๊ะตัวนี้พอยาวสำหรับหกคนค่ะ

Incorrect neutral degree order—พอ follows ยาว.

✅ โต๊ะตัวนี้ยาวพอสำหรับหกคนค่ะ

to tua ni yao pho samrap hok khon kha

This table is long enough for six people. (ordinary polite speech, female speaker)

4. Confusing sufficiency พอ with exact-fit พอดี

❌ เรามีอาหารพอดีสำหรับทุกคนครับ

Potentially misleading for intended simple sufficiency—พอดี suggests an exact or just-right amount.

✅ เรามีอาหารพอสำหรับทุกคนครับ

rao mi ahan pho samrap thuk khon khrap

We have enough food for everyone. (ordinary polite speech, male speaker; sufficiency only)

Key Takeaways

  • มาก expresses high degree, เกินไป evaluates excess, and พอ marks a reached threshold.
  • Degree follows the property or action it modifies: ร้อนมาก, ดังเกินไป, ชัดพอ.
  • Negation reveals scope: ไม่แพงมาก, ไม่แพงเกินไป, and ยังไม่ถูกพอ make different claims.
  • พอดี means “just right” or “happen to” in its own constructions; clause-initial พอ can mean “when/as soon as.”
